Yeah well Christie Goldman wrote Tom and B'Elanna pretty well before the books that are set after VOY series ended. Then things got wacky, Riker/Troi got wacky in the books as well. I shudder to think what they might be doing to them now. But honestly who are TPTB that run the writing of the books? The killer B's left televised and movie Trek I doubt they run the books. Actually I found some Trek Writers very talented, but there are so many rules that I can't find a reason for. It's not like the movie or TV writers follow them. So in my mind it makes no sense.

Well I've read it and I agree with the Trek Movie reviewer. I think it was pretty good. Maybe not great, but a good first war story. I like where the book leave Trip and T'Pol very much.

Are we making this a spoiler thread, or spoiler free?

People usually use the spoiler code, it looks like this...
SPOILER!!!:

Hey it's good to see you here. I'm pretty new, so hi.

I would have liked more TnT but what was there was good. I'm just glad they're finally filing in the details of the Rmulan War years. I liked it to but had a couple of concerns.

SPOILER!!!:
Trip pretending to be a Romulan I can buy( they show emotions so it wouldn't be as difficult for him) but being a Vulcan on Vulcan and interacting with T'Pau and others who should recognize him from Enterprise seems to be a bit of a stretch. I also have doubts about the Vulcans reluctance to uphold their responsibilities to the Coalition of Planets. I've never bought into the idea that they would totally back off when they had to know their own security was at risk with the Romulans at war with Earth. The circumstances are very different from what occurred with the Xindi, which was an unknown threat. The Vulcans know all to well what the Romulans are capable of for T'Pau to sit back biding her time and hoping for the best just doesn't seem realistic even if she's a Syrranite. She's still a Vulcan and knows what an uncontrolled Vulcan/Romulan nature is capable of and it's not like she is aware they re targeting Vulcan also.

WOW! Now that I know that... So not paying for it... Really I can think of 10 writers here just off the top of my head that can do better than that.

I think there's more to it pdsldl...

SPOILER!!!:
T'Pau is afraid that, now that her people are finally moving away from aggression (under V'Lar) and toward the peace and logic of Surak, dragging them into a new war will undermine this progress. But what I understood to be the case was that she's also secretly shipping weapons to the Romulans' old enemy on the far side of the Empire, essentially forcing the Romulans to fight a war on two fronts, which helps the Coallition - it buys them more time and means the Romulans can't commit all their forces against Earth. Also, I suspect the destruction of Surak's katra at the end will force T'Pau's hand. Her people, upon learning the Romulans were involved, might demand they get involved more directly in the war.

Speaking of Trip and T'Pol, the thing I appreciated most about this book is that T'Pol now basically thinks of Trip as her bonded husband. By the end, the bond is stronger than it's ever been.

As for Trip undercover as a Vulcan, something tells me that T'Pau either knows who he is or suspects. Remember, she mind melded with T'Pol during the Vulcan arc in the last season. So she has to know about the bond. It could be that T'Pol even told her who Trip really was, knowing the Trip could or would help her.

Okay Zane you have valid points. I'm planning to reread parts of this as I skimmed rather quickly through parts of it. I'd already decided to give them the benefit of a doubt here but there's a long time before part 2 of this, which keaves it open to speculation as to where their going with all this. And yes things did progress nicely for TnT. That I liked also. Also liked Archer/Travis conflict over the Maru incident and a very realistic handling of the fallout for Archer. Better than I thought it would be.

For what it's worth, I share Zane's assessment.

Of course, from the human's perspective the whole thing is very confusing and disappointing since they don' fully understant T'Pau's reasoning.

I finished the book last night and am eagerly looking forward to the next one!

Zane after reading the spoilers you posted, I can't wait to finally read my book after finally getting it at the bookstore this morning. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the Vulcan story line and also Trip& T'Pol's storyline in the book.

One other thing I really liked...

SPOILER!!!:
...is the unspoken revelation that Archer was a pretty damn good captain after all. Travis leaves the ship early in the book after the Kobayasi Maru incident because he's lost confidence in Archer. He then takes the helm of the NX-Discovery, which promptly gets pasted on its first mission. NX-Challanger, also on one of its first missions, gets wiped out quickly by the Rommies too. (By the way, did anyone else appreciate the "Captain Dunsel" reference to the later TOS episode Ultimate Computer?) And at the very end of this book, NX-Columbia finally disappears (per the events in the Destiny book trilogy). And yet Enterprise is still going strong under Archer's command.

Actually there's a lot I liked about this book. ;-)

SPOILER!!!:
I really liked the scenes describe the Romulan attacks on the research out post and the aftermath of events from the Kobayashi Maru. Nice to see Trip again and the fact we see continuation of the that cliffhanger from the last book ended was well done.
I think this book is well written and like how the Vulcans and Romulans are dealt with so far in the book

There's certainly alot of suprises when it comes to some of the political intrigue in this book.[*The Vulcans staying neutral and letting Earth bear the brunt of the attacks because they think humans will come up with a way to defeat the technology controling the Vulcans and other ships with the teleprescence units. They also don't want the allies to know about the Vulcan/Romulan shared ancestrey or give their technology to the humans to change the balance of the war.]Sorry the spoiler code didn't work i forgot how you get it to work.

I'm not done yet and am not reading under the spoiler bars.

I'm at chapter 22 and love the stuff with the main crew. I think Martin is too enamored of Gannet Brooks, though. I also like the Vulcan political intrigue.

But so far, I like what I'm reading - I just want more Archer, more Trip, more T'Pol, more Malcolm and more Hoshi. Travis has always been a blank, so I don't care.
