Re: New Fanfic Up!
OK, now it happened to me. Internet Explorer wanted to run a "Windows 2007 Active X Control" I said OK and the story disappeared for that browser. I went and looked and it was still there if I use Mozilla Firefox. That docx idea is a possibility. I can just save docx files as oldfashioned doc files and see what happens next.

Re: New Fanfic Up!
I posted another chapter of "Implications" but there is a problem: a lot of coding shows up at the beginning of the page for no good reason. I believe it is readable, but I can't post anymore until the systematic problem is fixed.

Looks like whatever converter software you're using is having quite a lot of problems lately. If it is anything that a seasoned code monkey (read: programmer) can fix, I'd be happy to lend a hand

Re: New Fanfic Up!
Thanks Kotik, Please introduce yourself to Elessar by PM! He is the site owner. We do have two programmers already: Dark Rain and mjimeyg. but you might want to announce your availability for the future in case one of them becomes too busy.

Too busy, ha, I'm always bloody busy
. No rest for the wicked and all that (looking at YOU, phpmail)
Thanks Kotik, this is mjimeyg's baby, so you'd probably be best talking to him about it.
Official position: PLEASE use Firefox for browsing the web. Internet Explorer is NOTORIOUS for having compatiblity and security issues and generally causing headaches. Firefox is free for everyone and it does a far better job, not just on this site but others too. We are, however, working to fix the issues y'all brought to our attention.
Thanks,

Re: New Fanfic Up!
I have put a fix in so you should be able to read stories in all browsers.
But like dark_rain said, Firefox is best.
IE does NOT conform to Internet standards. Web programmers have to write twice as much code to compensate for IE's habit of working in its own fantasy world.
Everytime Microsoft releases an update new issues arise.
Bottom line, switch to Firefox.
Admins I recommend switching to firefox for uploads at least.
Writers please try and submit stories in .doc format (Word 2000 -2003) as opposed to .docx (Word 2007) format.
In closing... LONG LIVE FIREFOX AND THE APPLE MAC!

Mjimeyg, you're talking to a tech dummy. I have Word 2007. How do I submit something any other way?

Re: New Fanfic Up!
I don't have the 2007 software, but if I'm not wrong, when you save your work on your computer, you can choose the format of the document. If you choose "save file as" in your archive menu, you'll see a window where you write (if it isn't already written) the tittle and under it is "save as". If you click the little arrow next to the white box you'll open a menu where you could choose the format type.
I don't know if I've explained it clearly enough
but I hope it helps.

Re: New Fanfic Up!
Yep, you do "save as" and go down under where you put the title in, the box where it says "save as type," where the default setting is Word Document.
Click on it to open a window of other possible file formats, and scan down that list until you highlight "Word 97-2003 document," then click SAVE.
You might conceivably get a message about losing some formatting, but it shouldn't be anything important, so just click okay. You'll be able to tell if it maintains that format because the file you attach to your email for here will have a .doc suffix instead of a .docx suffix.

Yep, Escriba and Alelou got it right.
When you click save or save as, there is a drop down box that lets you select older word formats, see image below:

Just select that option that is highlighted (Word 97 - 2003 Document) and that should do it.
Re: New Fanfic Up!
I have a question! I write in Mac Pages - and generally send stuff as a doc format. That seems to be working, but if there is an easier, better way - let me know.

Generally speaking I go by the theory, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.'
In your case it seems to be fine... as long as you stick to the doc format you'll be cool.
Its only if you have been submitting docx that you should worry about changing to doc.

Re: New Fanfic Up!
I'll be posting an official announcement to the effect of what the techies said above: Please try to use Firefox (or Safari! Ok, Elessar is a strange PC-using-Safari-fan, but I LOVE IT!) if you have problems, but we're not abandoning IE issues either. We'll continue to work fixes as fast as our little nubby fingers can move!
Admins will be posting with Firefox or Safari.
