Re: Paxton's goal
I honestly think Terra Prime's objectives had to be more complex than removing aliens out of Earth's solar system and using Elizabeth as a tool to discourage human/alien matings. And since Paxton wasn't killed, I think it's a Dang shame that there can never be a possibilty for development for that outside of fanfiction.

Re: Paxton's goal
Confessing that I haven't read the whole thread. Paxton wanted to keep the human race "pure" and keep Earth for the Earthlings. The purpose of the bilateral cloning of Elizabeth was, he thought he would show the world this hybrid baby and everyone would recoil in horror. You don't get it? Good. But this is the main objection to biracial marriages: they will *GASP* result in biracial children.
??????
Yeah, I know. So what? But Paxton was thinking like an aparthied era South African or a Nazi and other ignorant bigots that are lucky fewer and fewer these days. And he expected other people to react the way he had conditioned himself and his followers to react.
Peter Simons had a really funny take on this episode with "the hate-inducing cute little baby girl." Go to the end of "Season 4 Deconstructed": http://triptpolers.houseoftucker.com/mi ... cted.shtml

OK I must be brain dead because it took me to get all the way through *the_abomination* to realize he was being sarcastic. Man this has not been a good day.

Re: Paxton's goal
Okay it must have been if you missed the part about T'Pol threatening Paxton and being completely irrational over a biomass grown in a test tube and all the superhero crap he spoke of with 20 minutes of investigation and sending TnT down without disguises and phaser fights. He hit all the stupid things about the story the way it played out. Expecting a cute baby to turn millions of people into murdering madmen was my point exactly. Some yes. Enough I don't think so. I've read his work but missed this. He does humor well and his sarcasm here works.

Re: Paxton's goal
For good reason Trek has treated genetic engineering, as the case with the Eugenics Wars, Khan and the augments, as something very bad indeed.
But there's a real disconnect between that and the proliferation of hybrids in the Trekverse. Leaving aside the impossibleness from a scientific point of view, how can you create a human-alien hybrid (or alien1-alien2) without resorting to genetic engineering?
How is selecting the best genes possible (from two different species no less) to create a Spock any different from selecting the best genes possible to create Khan Noonien Singh?

Re: Paxton's goal
Good question. For me I think it's about intent. Kahn was about making a superior breed of human, super strong, super intelligent, perfection, in order to dominate. Creating a healthy child is far different. Would it be wrong to modify a gene to eliminate the possiblity of cancer? Some might say yes, me I don't think it would. So how is it any different to use gene therepy to make sure two different spieces have a healthy child. Your correcting physical deformities, not trying to create a super soldier. In The Augments when Soonge was trying to "correct" the genetic "defect" that made the "children" aggressive that is wrong. Correcting a gene that causes a hole in the heart is something else. And that's the type of genetic engineering you would use for a hybrid. I don't have a problem with that but some might. My genetics made it impossible to have kids. I would have jumped at the chance to have it fixed.

Just trpn. Absolutely adored that piece you provided the link for. Had not read it and will go back and read itin its entirety after book marking it.
Genetics. That is what makes us what we are. Millions of the little buggers.
Right combination and we get a moazrt, another combinatin and we get Charles Manson.
Gives us the color of our eyes, hair, body, height. etc.
So, someday someone will come along and find a way to jigger them and reallly mess up things.
Inevitable, unfortunately.
Like so many things it may be started with the best of intentions but somewhere, somehow, somone will come along to use it for more evil purposes.

Like I said intent is the catch phrase for something like this. But really Silverbullet so pessimistic. Who knows there could be a birghter future.

Re: Paxton's goal
Could be but based on History I doubt it.
Greed, hate, perverseness.
Just to take an innocent example. TV
It had great promise but like Radio it fell into the hands of Advertisers and Companies wanting more profits. so now we have the Hooch girl that lures in the sucker promising a show but really once the suckers get into the tent they are sold snake oil.
Years ago there was 50 minuts of program time and ten minutes of comercial time in an hour.
today it is 23 minutes of commercial time and 37 minutes of programming. We really get only a half hour program and are forced to put up with endless commercials strategically placed into the programming. That is why DVR's are so good. Commercial can be skipped.
I like to watch some chanels that boradcast programs from the early 50's without the commercials. 50 minutes of a program. Wonderful.

Hey - not all commericals are bad. (some are awful, sure but not all) There's nothing wrong with a company telling you why you should buy their cheese instead of the other guy's cheese. My husband is an advertising exec. It's really fun when a commericial he has been working on for over a year finally airs. A lot of work goes into those.
Sorry - just a little defensine about it I guess.

Re: Paxton's goal
You know something? In Europe for years there were stations that had no commercials and some that did. I remember in Germany ZDF had commecial all at one time. What they had to draw people in was the liitle carttoon men in tine episodes between commercials.
That and the fact that the comercials didn't insult one's intelligence.
Now I guess there are channels like those in the US that are saturated with Commercials.
I sometimes look for the hook in commercials.
I can remeber one where a female held up a glass with orange looking liquid in it. she says "Tastes just like Fresh!"
However she does not say Fresh what. the glass of orange looking flued would lead one to believe she was talking about Orange jUice but one would be wrong.
another one was a guy talking about Dog food.
He says "Great big Beefy Chunks."
No "great big chuncks of Beef."
Diiference one is an adjective and the other is a noun.
but if one is not paying attentin one thinks he is saying the latter. Wrong again.
too often commercials are very misleading.
One I always liked was "Available" especially on Cars.
sure available, for a price. but that is somehow left out.

Sillverbullet check your PM box. How did we get on commercials? Isn't this supposed to be about Paxton and Terra Prime.

Don't feel bad, Aikiweezie. I made my living writing what amounts to 'junk mail' for years. Ah, the moral outrage one hears about THAT.
Advertising is one of those fields, like politics or journalism, where everybody else thinks 1) it's incredibly easy, because they don't really understand it, and 2) everybody who does it is a jerk. I guess it makes them feel more virtuous somehow. Whatever.
OMG, ANOTHER new chapter! NORTH STAR Chapter 28

Re: Paxton's goal
Warpgirl, answered your PM with one of my own.
back to topic at hand.
Paxton's motives were evil.
He was evil but not in his eye sor in the eyes ofhs followers.
Hitler had people who thought he was great.
anyway. Paxton should have been tried and Hanged at least and his folowers put in a moon based prison or on a prison asteroid.
HOwver, we can oly imagine that.

Re: Paxton's goal
That's obvious, still I think his plans were considerably more insidious than what we saw. And because he didn't die, all sorts of lovely havoc could be played out in Fanfic.
