Re: Print T/T'P Update: Kobayashi Maru book now available
I've been very reluctant to buy the books. Since I have to buy them online and have them 'shipped here, it is a considerable investment, and I might not be satisfied with the outcome. So far, although there has been acknowledgement of TnT and some development (perhaps even more than we got in the actual show), I'm not sure how "happy" the eventual ending might be. By this point, with all the angst and overall crap we had to put up with, I wouldn't be happy unless they end up alive, well, and together, regardless of what they're doing.
I guess I'll keep on waiting. I'm cool with just fanfic right now.

Thanks for the info Zane I'm really glad that we get to see Trip & T'Pol get some important things to do in this book.Glad to hear that their relationship is being dealt more in depth than the last book.

That's what libraries are for, anyway. I'm kinda of with you on this one, largely because I come from that comic book background where this bait and switch occurs on a regular basis. Oh, they're finally getting together! Oh... but one of them tragically dies and the other one is emo the rest of his/her life over it. I have read LFM and I got the distinct impression that Trip spent most of his life alone, living under cover, on one mission after another and is still, at the end of his life "dead" and still bitter of his sister's death, at that. T'Pol isn't mentioned in that scene and I'm a bit too jaded by genre cliches to hold my breath or assume the authors were just being super clever and leaving out any hint that there was a happy ending. I dunno. Everytime I look at how the 'ship is being handled in the books, I keep catching a glimpse of that fridge in my peripheral vision.*
In a rather infamous Green Lantern comic story, his girlfriend at the time was cornered in the kitchen by his mortal enemy, killed, and stuffed in the fridge for him to find when he got home. "Women in Refrigerators", aka fridging, has since become a rally cry that refers to the love interest of a more important male character being reduced to a plot device (even if she's a main character in her own right) specifically to advance the male character's narrative with emo manpain.
I just don't have faith of the heart over an implied sex scene (that many fans have written quite well, thank you) and maybe T'Pol gets dribbles of her brain back.
Uh... I sorta have these really late fees at the library I've yet to reconcile. That being said, you're definitely riding my wavelength K. When is the contrived bullshit going to end? I'm sick, sick, sick of it, and it annoys the hell out of me when people perpetuate this MO in fanfiction.
I would love for the authors of these books to prove me wrong, but I have my doubts. So, I guess we'll just wait and see... and in the interim I'll continue to read fanfiction that does not regurgitate the contrived bullshit.
Could all of you believe what is happening to me in reading all that?
I don't think I will read this book.
Stolen love.
The same Archer.
Gratuitous angst.
Enough!
I'm tired.
The reasons are clear:
1) the datum is "The Abomination" (it would have been necessary a little more of courage, in my mind)
2) Many people already said this: Trip... a spy!
No! I don't want to die while following a stupid hope.
From errors... errors only come!
Normally I'm not so raw, I know.
But I feel Rigil's Endeavour more, more as "Canon" than these (forgive me) commercial books.
And I have mentioned only "Endeavour".
The mass of stories I have read (Desert Rose..., Eternal Linkage..., and many others) are worth more, more than these books, for me.
Excuse me for my vent.
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four
And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

Re: Print T/T'P Update: Kobayashi Maru book now available
Just finished the book and for my money, I really liked it a lot. It sets up the Romulan War, which is presumably the next book(s), perfectly. It ends with a major never-before-seen moment in Star Trek history, and I'm not talking about the destruction of the Kobayashi Maru, although that appears as well. I'll just give you two little words: "It's begun." Valdore is a great character in this, and Spoek - oh my goodness! Archer even squares off with a Klingon general in a bat'leth flight. The Vulcans seem to have more secrets. And there's a cool technological development by the Rommies - a new weapon - and I think it's going to eventually lead to something from Star Trek II: prefex codes. It's a darn good read, if you ask me. If you liked the last book, this one raises the stakes considerably.

I got my book today and read almost 3 chapters I like that T'Pol's past is shown and her thoughts about Trip in this chapter are well written. I really like what little I've read so far.

SEE! You shouldn't judge a book by its predecessor
(i.e., LFM).

*laughs* I've been in that situation. Based on the descriptions, since TnT is a subplot (possibly added largely to attract buyers, not to be too cynical) within the larger Super!Archer story, you might be able to skim through the boring bits and find out whatever you want right at the library. It only took me a few hours to do that with TGTMD, and that was only because I kept re-reading things to laugh at them. It does sound like maybe T'Pol is somewhat more proactive in this one, though that doesn't preclude her from being a complete trout. If you're more of a Trip fan, he probably gets the lion's share of characterization in the subplot, based on prior example. So the library is still your friend.

Or you could try to negotiate down your library fees. Beg youthful poverty. Look abject and remorseful. Offer to donate used books in good condition for their book sale. Maybe volunteer an hour or two. Most of all, try to find the kindly librarian who can actually strike your fees off the system.
The fees are just there to 1) get books back that would never come back otherwise, and 2) raise some funds. But it's not a code of law or anything. You can talk to 'em. And a lot of libraries have amnesty days.

Re: Print T/T'P Update: Kobayashi Maru book now available
Ordered a copy. Hope it is a good read. I am not much impressed with the Star Trek novels published in the last couple of years. Guess I will make the rounds of my favorite used book stores to pick up older novels I haven't read.
Working on a major fan fic project. Two-thirds done. Hope to put it up in the not TOO distant future.

I think you'll enjoy it. I really liked it a lot, and a lot of the people who are reading it or who have finished it over at TrekBBS had the same positive reaction. Check the thread for the book in the Lit section. I would absolutely recommend you read The Good That Men Do first, however, to fully apprecaite it. It's also helpful to have read the wrap-around story of Last Full Measure too (the rest of the book isn't necessary).

Has anyone finished the book here yet? If so, care to offer some thoughts?

Re: Print T/T'P Update: Kobayashi Maru book now available
I just finished the book. The Vulcans are definitely trying to hide things from starfleet and desperate to keep things hidden from them. they'll do anything no matter what the cost to lie to Star fleet about their ships being compromised by Romulans. They don't want the truth to come out.The Klingon and Romulan storylines are continued from where season 4 left off. The attacks on civilian freighters get really ugly.It looks like the Coalition of planets is between a rock and a hard place. Trip has alot to do in this book and we get to see he's in a dangerous situation. There is alot of espionge & lies and betrayals. There's some nice TnT moments in this book. This book has one heck of a cliff hanger ending.

I like how T'Pol thoughts and feelings about Trip are portrayed in this book. Her loyalties are to Trip. And Trip thinks about her alot too. Asso I hope you'll like this book.
