The lamp at the golden door! They were invited...and they came. There was one guy in our family who fit that description. My dad said he used to visit when he was a kid - one year showing up flush, the next year completely broke. He had an accent which was half way between Scottish and Brooklinese according to my dad. And this guy and his (first) wife had a scheme to bilk a wealthy woman out of her money, so the family legend goes. So he divorced his first wife and married the wealthy woman with intent to get the money, divorce her and remarry his first wife. Well, the second wife got pregnant and he decided to stay with her instead of going back to the first wife. I have always wondered if that was his intention all along. Never found out as this all happened in the 1920's.

Yup, the con artists saw the lamp light and came through the golden door.
