Hth2k, you better follow the doc's orders. That shit ain't nothing to play with. But the modern treatments are pretty effective. Several members of my family have it, and are still kicking years later.

It is relatively routine here in the USA for people/families to get financially wiped out by a single serious illness. It happens all the time. At least she doesn't have any kids depending on her, or a house payment to make. At worst, she can always declare bankruptcy if she has to. The nice thing about abject poverty (I speak from experience) is that once you hit rock bottom, there really isn't much more that anyone can do to you.

Unfortunately that's pretty true. I say 'unfortunately' because declaring bankruptcy has become such a savior financially and doesn't last as long on your record anymore that just about anyone is doing it for what would be ridiculous circumstances 25 years ago. I speak from 2nd hand experience... someone I know used it to solve all their problems when of course, it didn't.

This is true. I do not dispute one word of it. But when the bigwigs at Enron can plunder retirement accounts, leaving thousands of loyal employees destitute in their golden years, and then their families get to kick back and declare homestead exemptions on their primary mansions and family vehicle exemption on their favorite Mercedes, not to speak of those secret bank accounts in the Cayman islands, I see nothing wrong with Joe Sixpack filing bankruptcy to get out from under after he has already drained his bank account, sold his jalopy and mortgaged his mobile home to the hilt.

My whine is that I've been having a lot of close encounters with 21st century medicine lately.
It's amazing what they can find out.
Just got back from CTscan. What is that nauseating fluid they make you drink?!?! I would have asked, but I was too busy gagging it down.

Yikes I hope y'all get better

The doctor said I have like bladder infection. Doesn't feel like bladder infection though so now I'm on antibiotics. They wanted to draw blood too but I didn't let them because I hate needles!!! And they did an ultrasound and said the appendix and kidney and liver looked normal. Well and now I feel terrible from the meds sigh.

Still did the right thing. A bladder infection would eventually kill you, I'm pretty sure. In fact... I'm reminded of someone famous who I think died of a bladder infection that caused sepsis. This make sense D?

YOU POOR THING! Bladder infections are so SO SO so horrible. And it just feels so awful and weird. Not even pain but just this weird feeling that becomes so horrible and weird that it IS horrible pain, but this grim new kind of pain you never felt before. Brrrrrrrrr.

Take alllllll your meds, cause one time, I missed the last 2 pills, and the infection came back 50 times worse and I had to take more antibiotics to get rid of that one. (And guys, ignore the next part:) Any ladies with bladder infections may get a yeast infection on top of everything else, cause the antibiotics kill all the germs, even the good ones, and so the yeast count goes way up. So watch out for that. But it's not that big of a deal. Good times. Gentlemen, I return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Eat yogurt daily, T'Pop Tarts. That will help keep the Cipro from devastating your normal friendly bacteria in the gut and, ahem, other areas.

And drink A LOT of water/fluids. Try to make a habit of it and maybe you won't ever have to deal with one of these again.

And Enterprikayak is right -- don't suffer all this and then blow it by not finishing all the meds. On the other hand if you are getting violently ill from the meds, you need to call the emergency room and maybe they can substitute something a little easier to handle. Cipro is fairly intense, but I believe it's pretty much the best broad-spectrum antibiotic.

Good thing about that: if you also caught anthrax from some zoo animal, you'll be saved!

Absolutely. Bladder infections can climb to the kidneys, causing pyelonephritis and sepsis. Kidney infections are actually the second most common infectious cause of death in nursing home patients, second only to the demented oldster's best friend, pneumonia. In younger healthier people kidney infections can still make you hospital-sick if you neglect them, and if they remain untreated they can definitely kill you.
