It's very peculiar that if you even mention God or prayer or scripture on a college campus you practically get lynched but you can actively promote anything from fascism to communism to homosexuality to sadomasochism and nobody bats an eye. There's something seriously WRONG with this picture. :?

Actually, here, a man was banned from campus for petitioning to have his name placed on the ballot, because even though his table was set up off to the side and out of the way, supposedly he was "confusing incoming students", which is the lame excuse that they came up with after their "disruptive" excuse was disproven by basically everyone who had been anywhere near the area. Yet, Baptist evangelicals are allowed to stand on the sidewalks and push their little doom and gloom booklets on anyone unfortunate enough to have to go by them, and sermonize to anyone within shouting distance.

On the campus where I work, I have seen just about every group that exists set up a table at one time or another, including religious groups. They have to book the space for the day. One time things were getting heated between the Israeli students and the Arab students. We have students from all over the world at our university. But it did not come to violence as I remember, just words. So if you represent a legitimate organization, I think you can set up a table, talk to people, pass out literature. This is a state university so you don't have the ability to restrict groups like you may have at a private university. Gotta keep an eye out so you don't do something to jeopardize federal funding, financial aid for students and such. I am not sure about political campaigning. I'd have to look the rules up on that.

The evengelists aren't at tables, they're literally standing on the sidewalks as people are trying to get to and from class. The libertarian petitioning to be added to the ballot was at a table, off to the side and out of the way. He also didn't shout at people or try to shove anything into their hands.

Sounds like discrimination, CX.

And "shouting at people, getting in their faces, and trying to put things into their hands" isn't exactly preaching Christ crucified, healing people, and casting out demons, is it? It's like they've replaced their sword with a rubber chicken.

I'm pretty embarrassed for them.

People who promote their cause by such agressiveness may ironically be hurting their cause - driving people away more than attracting them. This appeared to be the reaction to the conflict between the Middle Eastern students on our campus. If the administration on your campus won't try to have a quiet talk with these folks and ask them to tone down their approaches, I don't know what you can do. If they get even more aggressive and physical it could become a police matter and no one wants that, I am sure.

They make a point of not actually making physical contact, but that doesn't stop them from invading personal space and from yelling at people. One of them talked down to a kid because he had some kind of a tattoo on his leg (he was wearing shorts) and one around his neck. No, doesn't help their cause at all. I don't understand why the university lets them do it, frankly, because it's been an ongoing complaint since I started going to school here in fall of 2001.

Yeah, that's bad. I was in Campus Crusade for Christ the last 3 years and I'd just like to say we didn't do that! Our goal was never to shout at people. We did cool stuff, though. Every year we put out plastic Easter Eggs all over the campus. And because I was involved in this, we never had that gross fake chocolate in them, either! We had candy and a Bible verse in all the eggs. Yes, most people ate the candy and disregarded the verse, but that was their choice.

So, not all Christians are like those obnoxious ones!

And I do hope you don't get any more stories like that one, CX. Knowing some creative writing people, they probably thought it was genius.

I just thought it was boring as hell. It was like a cheap dime novel version of Titanic, but with two guys and on the Hindenburg instead.

I could write a response if I wanted to (I need to do 5), but I settled for just mentioning that in class while we were talking about it. I made some comparisons to Titanic and Pearl Harbor because of the way the fictional characters were included in the middle of real-life drama at the cost of that real-life drama to focus on those characters, and in the end makes one of them responsible for the disaster (by negligence due to being distracted by jealousy and fear of being found out). A few people disagreed with me about Titanic and Pearl Harbor. :D

Heh and reminds me of those evangelists who caught me outside tried to convert me even though I told them like a million times I'm an atheist and I don't wanna like pray with them and stuff :? :? :? :? and they wouldn't frelling leave me alone like for hours and then they started accusing me of killing Jesus when they heard I had some Jewish relatives. :? :? :? :? :?
