So, now that James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow are both nominated as best director - doesn't it feel like a Katherine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy movie come to life?

Whip smart and beautiful film director has been toiling in the boys club of Hollywood for years, making mostly good, artistic pictures with limited success. She makes a brilliant, original but little scene war film, considered the best film about the current wars made. She's nominated for a best director oscar (only the fifth woman who has ever been nominated) and has a chance to be the first to win. This is complicated by the fact that her super successful ex-husband, who is a notorious douche-bag and philanderer who has gone through a couple of wives since their married, is also nominated for best director. He made a monster hit - a commercial and highly manipulative Science Fiction film that is special effects driven and the plot is ripped off from other films, including his own. Now, they keep running into each other at awards dinners.

Doesn't this sound like a movie?

James Cameron's a douchebag?!

Sorry to burst your bubble, Elessar. But he's a notorious douchebag. That said, I've met a couple of tech people who have worked on his films - and he's always very respectful of the technical crew. He started as a techie himself. Many Hollywood directors treat the tech people like gum on their shoe and suck up to the actors - Cameron seems to be the opposite - unless he's dealing with a really big star.

That said, he and Kathryn Bigelow do get alone great and at the golden globes, Cameron said he thought she would win.

What is a Douchebag?

I Know what I thought was Doucebag (something used for feminie hygene) but these days I am not sure of what anything means.

Same thing. Only it's currently used as an insult, by the younger set mostly, to mean a really unpleasantly impolite person. I've only heard males being referred to as "douchebags" by my daughter, but the term could also be gender non-specific because she's usually referring to her brother when she uses it.

There's another, unprintable definition over at urban dictionary. But, they define Douchbag as:

"An individual who has an over-inflated sense of self worth, compounded by a low level of intellegence, behaving ridiculously in front of colleagues with no sense of how moronic he appears."

Although by that strict definition, JC is not a douchebag since he is obviously very smart. But if you write the following into google search:

james cameron do


it will fill in "douchebag"


And the term does go back at least to the 1970s because there's a famous old skit about the term on the original Saturday Night Live.

Didn't know it went as far back as the 70s as an insult. I was thinking the 80s with Revenge of the Nerds, when the one jock dude asks Booger what he thinks he's looking at and Booger answers, "I thought I was looking at my mother's douchebag, but then I realized that's in Ohio."

I always thought the term was really gross - and avoided using it. Though I always thought the SNL skit was funny and gross. But it's such a huge part of the lexicon now, I have stopped wincing every time I hear it and even use it.
