Well, I can see how someone might get stuck in teaching, having achieved tenure, and burn out and inflict that on students. Luckily I'm coming back to this after a 20-year break so I'm all fired up, which is helpful because frankly I don't think I've ever worked harder in my life, except possibly when I taught high school. Also I think it works out to about 20 cents an hour at this point and if I had to live on this without my husband's income and benefits I think I'd get quite resentful. But it's work that is good to do, at least.

On the down side, now I have a whole new course to start putting together before the spring semester because one of these I haven't taught before.

Please don't misunderstand me, I empathize with teacher in those situations, but it's really not the students fault. Yeah some are apethetic, lazy, jerks. But teachers need to take proactive steps to deal with the circumstances you just described. Preferably looking outside their jobs to do it. Because a hostile teacher just makes the apethetic jerks worse. Making school life hell for the student who are there to have a good experience.

I forgot to mention that we had a power outage that took out half the city yesterday. But it just missed where I live so I never noticed. It took out the newspaper too, but the power was back on when I arrived so it didn't affect me at all.

Thank God it didn't happen on Monday since the power outage also took out the place where I did my annual mandatory car check-up and that's when I went there. Yesterday there were cars that had been hoisted up and that they couldn't get down until many hours later.

There was also a dairy that had to throw out a lot of milk and cheese products, and our biggest shopping mall was affected too. I don't know how much food that had to be thrown away.

Oh, it all got fixed yesterday. The power was back on everywhere by yesterday evening.

But the dairy had to spill a lot of milk...

Hope it stays fixed. Is it cold in Sweden now? It's starting to get cold here.

Alelou, the job you do is very important. You're educating today's youth. I imagine that's very difficult, but it is really valuable. Sounds like you're working hard.

I'm definitely quite intrigued with the Cal-Foster potential pairing in Lie To Me. MAJOR sparks on Monday's episode. In the past whenever I've liked a couple, I've ended up liking the guy. If that happens this time, I'm going to start feeling really old. :?

Our basement flooded today. :(

Alelou--That's one area I feel fortunate. All my professors this semester are enthusiastic about what they're teaching. Not in an obnoxious, peel-them-off-the-ceiling kind of way, but...it's not how I remembered years ago, when the attitude was more like "Yeah, well...I'm getting paid whether you pass or not..." Each one is special and I really like going to class.

Well you'd think last night would have been awesome, mom and dad brought over dinner, cake (two kinds!), and good Irish Whiskey. And we're all set up to watch the game (Yankees vs Angels) I mean really can it get better. Great food, the people I love most in the world, good whiskey? I think not. But then oh something had to ruin it of course their names Joe Geradi and AJ Burnett. Joe Geardi is a MORON! He had to keep his favorite pitcher in that game, even though he gave up 4 homeruns in the 1st inning! Really who does that when they have a rested bullpen! And then after the other guys work their rear ends off in the sixth to tie, he STILL keeps Burnett in and he gives up another run to tie. Finally by the time Gerardi gets wise and pulls him out it's too late. Oh an AJ Burnett has no imagination when it comes to pitching, every batter could read him like a sign in Las Vegas. They better win the next game without this cockey moron stuff. You can only be cockey if you KEEP ON EARNING IT!!!!!!!!! Can you tell two shots of whiskey didn't help?

I am NOT a Yankee fan, so I wasn't too upset about the outcome of that game. But my team is sitting home, so I can't say much...

Bether I can take a loss when the team plays hard and just doesn't win. That's an honorable loss, but I can't stand stupidity. However I must say GO YANKEES!

I feel like putting this in the dream thread because it feels like it was all a dream, but I went to a party last night that just ended weirdly (for me). I had been talking to this one guy for half an hour about economics (my field, I work at an economics journal) and in retrospect I realize I can chalk this up to the late hour and the alchohol, but the conversation began getting weird. He kept stepping into my space and jabbing a finger at me and said the world would be better with NO economists (after I had been defending them all night). Then I had to bluntly tell him he needed to step back. Which ended the conversation with him, and another guy looks at me sympathetically and opens a new conversation with the statement that "capitalism would work if only we could overcome fear, don't you agree?" Thus launching a conversation where my side was basically, "no I don't agree. I don't even understand your point." Well he came to stop and I just looked at him baffled and a women began a very interesting personal story. Two minutes into her story, the "fear" guy, interupted her and said "excuse me but I want to make one more important point. I was talking and I wasn't done (yes he was)." She litterally rolled her eyes and turned her back on him furious (it was outrageous) and then he subjected me to another inane example about fear and capitalism. Then he finishes and tells the other woman to finishe her story, and she goes "In your dreams!"

Well I got home and told my husband THANK YOU for taking me to that party. You are so much more sane than your friends. I now have renewed appreciation for you, lol . . .

Jt -that was a weird evening - I kind of like deep conversations and discussions - but the guy that got into your space and flagging his finger sort of freaked me out only reading about it. Made me think about a guy who stalked me many years ago.
It makes my story about my shrinked jeans I was about to tell a bit lame in comparison. I have bought a new pair of jeans, but they are too long. So I washed them before adjusting, but the jeans shrinked at the wrong placed and I had to wiggle my way into the jeans and started walking around like the aliens form Galaxy Quest. When I asked my husband this morning if he like my new jeans, he said "They are very amusing - in the way you put them on this morning."

Did they stretch out again for you?

Next time just stretch them out while they're wet and let them dry on a line.

I hate tight pants.
