Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
CoffeeCat, yep . . . that about sums it up (your immediate reactions).
I just got on to report another spontaneous Star Trek review from one of sons' friends. Another 18-year- old boy who works at the movie theater and therefore gets to see every movie. Yesterday, he saw a picture of me and J. on the NextGen bridge, and asked, "Did you see Star Trek." I said, "Sure! What did you think?" He says, "It was the best movie ever." So I asked, "Are you a Star Trek fan?" He goes, "Well now I am. I'm starting to watch some of the Original Series episodes on [I forget what channel]." This is the kind of feedback I'm getting from young people.

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
Linda,
JustTripN, It's so funny that I work with only one other Trekkie and neither of us have seen the movie (until Sunday, that is) so when it came out, all the kids we work with went to go see it and their all excited about how cool Kirk is and that they never knew Spock was half human and that he was such a cool character. We're both listening to all the rave and are like, "Alright, who's the dork now???"
WarpGirl, God I hope Trekkies don't take over. All our entertainment would suck!
SPOILER!!!:
- I'm sad they imploded Vulcan too. I hope at least Tuvok's parents survived. I hope T'Pol lived through it. Also, the more I think about it, the more I feel sorry for the original Spock - I wonder if he blames himself for his whole time-line being destroyed... He must be very depressed. At least he has his father back and at least his father in this time line is more accepting of him.

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
Oops. Sorry. I didn't mean to shock you.
Lemme explain. It's been my experience that Trekkies in general have a tendency to worry about canon to the point where it saps the creativity out of everything.
Although I did notice that there are a growing number of us that are rather accepting of ideas that fly in the face of canon so long as it amuses us....

Yeah, my work totally blows...
Keeping track of things that have been established and trying to keep within it hardly saps creativity. In fact, if one is unable to do so within reason, and knowingly flies in the face of it (i.e. JJ Abrams) then I would assert that one is lacking creativity. Looking at the movie it's not all that hard to see that, either.

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
OH CX nobody said you weren't creative... No no no... I just think it would be fun for new Trekkies to come on in regardless of how they get there. Heck I don't have the patience to attempt to do what you do. Although I haven't gotten around to viewing yet. Just reading about it sets my head spinning. And while my story is AU on some things most of the changes come from trying to maintain a little continuity between the whole 700 episode canon. I like to think of myself as a little creative or why else would I do this?

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
Hi Coffecat. Great seing you here again.
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four
And here is the beginning of the whole story.
But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

It may not have been directed at me, but considering that the entire point of FND was to make a prequel that would better fit within established continuity, making a statement to the effect that worrying about canon saps creativity would mean FND would fit under that. I've also seen plenty of projects which do the best they can in regard to continuity which are or were hardly uncreative. The point I'm trying to make by using myself as an example is that one needs to think before condemning Trekkies who are concerned about continuity, which to me should be a pretty basic thing for any show. After all, I happen to be a Trekkie who's concerned about continuity. Is my work uncreative? No? Am I an exception? Maybe? But if I'm an exception, does it not follow that there may be others? And as I reminded my fellow DS9 fans in regard to a movie, it would be about who makes it, since they seem glad a movie was never made because they figured some hack like Berman, Braga, or Abrams would frak it up and make it suck.

What I wonder is this: will Trek ever go back to 'our' or 'the real' universe?

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
JZK - I doubt it. This movie is actually getting a HUGE response from people who've never even watched Star Trek before. It's what they've attempted to do in the past but have failed miserably until now. I personally don't care either way. But that's just me. I think they've set the stage to take an idea and run with it. More power to them.
CX, I wasn't talking about you at all. You're very careful, thoughtful, and creative and your writing reflects it. I was thinking more along the lines of, well if continuity constantly contradicts itself, whose opinion of what is canon should we follow. You yourself don't take Voyager all that seriously as opposed to other series like DS9, but about the poor sod who takes Voyager more seriously than DS9. Who's right? Who's wrong? The problem I've been noticing is that if someone takes something like *the_abomination* to mean that Trip really did die and says it's absolute canon - and then dogmatically states to everyone around them who sees it as a stupid holonovel that doesn't mean anything at all that they're blatantly wrong - it seems that person is sapping the creativity out of the people around them.
I hope that clears it up a little. And yeah, Trekkies annoy the crap out of me sometimes. Sorry, but they really, really do. I just can't help it.

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
I think the thing is to go with whatever makes the most sense when it comes to contradictions. I know what makes sense varies from person to person, but as an example if you have it established that Warp 10 is like an upper limit to the scale, and an episode of VOY treats it like a barrier that can be broken with the side-effect of turning people into amphibians, what makes more sense? Or, if nothing else, try to find a happy median. I mean, if something is stupid, fine, throw that out the window, but don't throw everything else out with it the way JJ did.

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
I have a deep sentimental attachment to the Trek history built up by TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, and the first, what is it?, ten or eleven movies - even with all its contradictions and alternate universes and stuff some of us reject like Trip's death. It is a very large canon. But if the AU shown in the new movie is attracting a whole new set of Star Trek fans, I say GREAT! It keeps the franchise alive. And they do still have to learn something of "old" or if you prefer "traditional" Trek to be able to rebel against it, ha, ha. And from what people are saying, liking the new movie is making new fans dig into traditional Trek? GREAT! We may get new fans of the old stuff! Hey, there are fans who only accept certain of the old series saying things like "TOS is the only true Trek" or "I like TNG and DS9 but VOY and ENT are not Trek". So rejecting parts of Trek is nothing new.
Personally, I find something to like in all the Trek iterations, though 95.6538 percent of my fan fic is in ENT.

Working on a major fan fic project. Two-thirds done. Hope to put it up in the not TOO distant future.
