You mean it IS illegal to fire off automatics here?

Guess we're more civilized than I thought.

Depends on where your back yard is, I think. Here, where the houses are so close together, not so much. Out at my grandma's, where there's nothing but field and woods behind her house, have at it. 8)

Nice weapon E!

So...have you been able to take her out to the range yet??

I haven't! It's been cold and rainy. I need to take it out and adjust the eye relief and zero the scope. I just mounted it on the rails in a somewhat-approximate position for eye relief where I could hold it standing and get a full sight picture but I'm sure when I go to actually fire it from a bench it won't be quite right. I'm anxious as hell to get out there! I'm a little nervous because it's a little hit-and-miss (lol, pun) in terms of accuracy with milsurp AKs. It might surprise me and be able to group 1 MOA at 100y (unfortunately my range doesn't go any further than that; or it might shoot like crap and group like 3 MOA. I can shoot 1 MOA with my Mosin Nagant, which is a more inherently accurate rifle, but it's also 30 years older than the AK, so hopefully the young gun can live up :). Maybe in the summer I'll use the clay range where I could step off my own distances, possibly up to 200y but I'd have to stake my own targets in the ground, and it's still wet and swampy back there).

To answer a few other questions: No you can't just shoot off ANY weapon in your backyard, regardless of where you are, I mean in terms of the law anyway. I should amend that, if you're outside city limits, I'm not 100% sure. But I'm outside city limits and I still live in a subdivision. If I started popping off my AK or even my .22 in my yard, I'm sure the cops would be called. Like I said, I'm sure that BY LAW you can't do it anywhere. But if you live way out in the boonies, nobody's gonna hear you, so people do that all the time. I know a guy that lives in Jerome, MO outside Rolla who does that. You have to be responsible too though and make sure that you know what is down range of where you're shooting for at least a mile, because those rounds will TRAVEL. Even a .22 round will go over a mile. Hell, a 5.56mm round (as used in the M16) will go about 3534 meters (had to memorize that for OCS ;)), or just over 2 miles.

As far as automatic weapons, it's not that you can't FIRE an automatic weapon, as if you could own one but not fire it, it's that you can't own one, at all, period, UNLESS you have the ultra-difficult-to-acquire BATFE Class 3 NFA license, which allows you to purchase "transferable" Class 3 automatic weapons. Here's the hitch. Yes, it means you can buy a fully auto Uzi or M16 or AK. But the industry is so neutered that you almost never get your money's worth. You literally pay like $16,000 for a 1971 M16A1 that our troops would have used in Vietnam... ya know... the ones that jammed every 10 rounds, lol. The prices are insane, they're way way way more than what a military pays per unit. Probably because of taxes or something. The only Class 3 weapons I would kind of like to own are an HK UMP, HK G36 which are like $30k a piece. And I would probably like to own an old school full auto Thompson. You also have to have a Class 3 to get some special class short barrel rifle AK variants, even in semiautomatic. And I think Class 3 also covers silencers and suppressors, but I'm not 100% sure on that. It also covers the odds and ends like M203 grenade launcher attachments for M16/AR15s, GP30 grenade launcher attachments for AK47/AKMs, and anything like that.

But if you had a Class 3, you would be subject to the same laws as everyone else as far as discharging in your neighborhood.

I think where you can do it varies state to state, too. My aforementioned grandma lives out in the sticks, where there's lots of farms, woods, fields, etc., and people there hunt on their property all the time...so I'm sure target practice is much the same thing. Plus Grandma is always shooting raccoons and skunks and stuff--89 years old and she'll kick your ass! 8)

My only question is: if I come visit you, can I try it??? :D

Uh, no, not really, unless of course you live in town in which case that would be pretty stupid.

And not to sound too cranky, but if some of you are so anti-gun, could you please refrain from posting in threads like this and giving the rest of us grief? It's just ever so slightly trolling and it gets under my skin something fierce.

I know they're just teasing me because I'm the weird liberal gun nut... try not to let it bother you. It's just a matter of where and how you grow up. Some people just don't grow up in the gun culture, so they don't get it. But I understand what you're saying. Just try for me :)

It does look like fun, actually. Some years ago I bought my brother-in-law a membership to his local range. I hoped he might teach me to competently fire a gun, but nothing ever came of it.

I'm actually marvelling at it, hence the smiley face. I'm not chastising anyone.

So, Elessar, is there anyone working at this gun range? Or is it come as you are, have fun, and try not to wander out anywhere in front?

The latter . I actually got yelled at one day by some asshole (busy day, tons of people there) because he failed to call hot range and he started sighting in his target (way down at the 100y line like 50 yards from me but it's the principle of the thing, nobody goes down range while someone's shooting). But the point is, he blamed me for going down range when "he was shooting", when in fact it is shooting range etiquette to call "cold range" or "clear" or w/e you want to say, when you're not shooting, and when you want to go down range, and THEN to say HOT RANGE, or "CLEAR THE RANGE" when you want to shoot again. This asshole didn't clear the range to shoot, he just assumed it was ready to go and then acted like I was the one who didn't know what I was doing b/c I looked young. Fuckin asshat. Pardon my language. I get worked up about these things.
