In MSPaint, use the marquee tool (that's the dashed line box at the top right.) Drag the marquee over the image and cut (control X or control C). Hit control N (for a new document), and then paste the image you cut from the original. Save as JPG or GIF.

Heh Rigil you forgot to mention resize the default canvas you get after you hit ctrl+n... to like really small. (Like even smaller than the image you wanna paste) Then when you paste the image will be exactly the size of whatever you paste like without additional blank space.

...well or just grab the corner like after you paste and drag it to resize. But I hate doing that (then again when do I ever work on Paint?? )

It didn't occur to me 'cause a new document always defaults to the size of what I've just cut when I create one in MSPaint. Whoops.
