Who started this 1985 stuff? But I had graduated college and was raising money to go to Thailand, and then I went to Thailand. And there was NO Internet and to communicate with my friends and family we made long cassette tapes and mailed them back and forth. It would have cost several days to a week of pay to make a long distance phone call home.

This is REALLY random, but my coworkers who index economics articles have just pointed out this new addition to our funniest titles list:

“The Use of Expert Opinion, Quality, and Reputation Indicators by Consumers: Evidence from the French Vaulting Stallion Semen Market.”

Seriously. In Applied Economics, vol 42, no 4–6

Somehow I doubt that eating live bugs would lead me to groping anything in a corner... except maybe the toilet bowl.

Ha! Thanks for that. That's really funny.

Not to bring everyone down, but I have a friend from Thailand who is on a committee to find out what happened to the people who were killed or disappeared during the recent political crisis. Now some facebook messages to those in the US are being blocked by this:

An access to such information has been temporarily ceased
due to the order of the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES)
under the authority of emergency decree B.E 2548 (A.D. 2005). ...

Nobody take your political freedoms for granted! Oh right, and it's 2548 in Thailand. They don't count from the birth of Jesus, naturally enouph, since most are Bhuddist.

I was looking up information on my Chinese Zodiac - and I found out that the Year of the Pig (my birth year) is The Year of the Elephant in Thailand! Nothing against pigs or boars, but I find elephants quite charming, so I was happy about that.

Well, since Finland belonged to Sweden for centuries, it's an understandable mistake. :-p The country does have a small, but active Swedish-speaking minority.

Speaking of Borg. Do you know the name of our Minister of Finance? Anders Borg. (And I kind of know him too...)

This story should warm your heart. It's about Hector, one of the dogs that formerly belonged to Michael Vick. Hector has scars and a missing part of his tongue, but his temperament was so good, he needed very little rehab. Today, Hector is a certified therapy dog who visits schools, nursing homes and hospitals. He visits schools to teach compassion to animals. He also visits abused children to teach them you can survive and thrive after abuse (though that's not mentioned in this story.)

Check out the video, and Hector's relaxed pose in his owner's arms!

Not all the dogs had such a happy ending, but I do know someone who works for the charity that helped rehab those dogs and offered sanctuary for those who were not as lucky as Hector. Let me know if you want more info about them or adopting one of their animals!

Honeybee. Year of the Boar is my Chinese Zodiac sign also. Better than the year of the Rat I guess.

Hector is a lucky Dog to find people who would care and rehab him.

Stories like that show that there are still good people in this old world of ours.
