A dear friend who is Lithuanian sent me this. His family were deported from Lithuania to Siberia, and he grew up there. He was 9 years old when they managed to get out.

He literally danced in the streets of Royal Oak Michigan when the Berlin Wall came down and we shared more than a few drinks in celebration. Needless to say he doesn't have much use for communism.

My Friend John tells me that he could walk straight out the back door and walk over 200 miles and never cross a road.

I've spent four years in Omsk, Siberia. It's a fantastic piece of earth. You can go 100 miles and you're still not in the next village. 8)

But blimey, the vodka :D We each had a bottle of samogon (self distilled potato Vodka at 63% alc) in the system and after an hour in the Banja (russian Sauna) we jumped through the garden stark naked at 37 celcius below zero  Went home with the mother of all colds

What I love about the Russians is that they so love their country. You perform a Russian folk song inTV and the young people celebrate. Try that in Western Europe...

Ah Bagpipes... Nothing helps the unworthy come unglued faster. My dad and his cousin used to play bridge against their wives and if the game was going poorly dad would put the bagpipe music on. Works every time.

Bagpipes were designed to scare the enemy. Even my Scottish father, who took us hear the pipes just about every month in Dunedin (Florida) when I was growing up, thought they sounded better if you walked out into the docks of the marina to listen to them from a distance.

I'm very fond of them, though. Must be genetic.

Hubby has a CD of bagpipe music that he likes to listen to in the car when we go on trips. Adds a whole new dimension to "Are we there yet?"

Hey, together with hurdy gurdy's and a bunch of guitars bagpipes are epic 8) They are usually the final act of the Pagan fest. Got mildly trampled in the wall of death two years ago to that song

It is funny how well a heavy metal singing style (and guitar for that matter) goes with bagpipes, really. There's the same loud, somewhat monotonous drone...

You could be worse off, D. I sometimes have to put a cut-off on the salsa on our trips because I can only take so much when not actually at a dance. (I also consider it the scourge of some downstate parks. I didn't choose to go out into the beauty of nature to listen to competing boom boxes blasting, pendejos.)
