Fried okra is crispedy crunchedy finger-lickin' good. There's a fried chicken place here in my home town that sells it like french fries with its chicken. Yum. Of course, I also like stewed okra (hot, with vinegar), okra and tomatoes, pickled okra, and shrimp okra gumbo, so I'm not picky.

Yep, Dis definitely has her Southern credentials in order.

My mother loves okra. She also loves collard greens and ham hocks and black-eyed peas and if you gave her some chicken feet she'd probably do something edible with them too. I should probably be glad she married a Scotsman since it saved me from a lot of that stuff. (Though it inflicted plenty of horrible boring Scottish food on me instead. Ever had lamb stovies? Gah. I won't eat lamb as an adult unless someone from the Middle East cooks it.)

WarpGirl

I'm not a big corned beef fan so I haven't tried this but I do have a few recipes at this site bookmarked to try.

http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2007/03/ve ... asted.html

You will probably need to make your own vegetable broth unless you've found one without onions.

If you would rather not eat soy you can google seitan corned beef recipe.

Awe Thanks so much. I was very bad last night had a piece of chicken because mom was sick and the vegetarian food she made I didn't like... I paid for it though the chicken made me sick. Not doing that again.

Well it's official I am going back on meat. Sadly being a Vegetarian is just not practical for me. If I need to stay with the Parents because of CP troubles I gotta eat what I'm given. But on a lighter note its amazing that if I have shrimp and Pasta I can make two different things and have food for the week!

Personally I think that if we were meant to be vegetarians, we wouldn't have canines (the teeth, not the dog). Not that vegetarians can't make it work if they want to. It's kind of cool that we have such adaptable bodies, really.

If I had the right circumstances I'd be a Vegetarian, although I heard some really scary things on CNN about pesticides and the produce isle. It creeped me out but good. I mean you can't win, cruelty to animals and the hormones they're given and pesticides in Veggies. I swear my mom's idea of being a farmer where you have control sounds better all the time. Tonight's dinner, Shrimp and penne with olives, red pepper flakes, and Italian seasoning. Tomorrow's Shrimp and Penne with mayo-mustard and sage sauce.

Rigil!!!!!! :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw:

Not everyone can afford it or have access to it, but if you can, grass-fed beef is generally considered the best option for those that are against the cruelty of industrial meat but not against actually eating meat.

Daughter decided to become a vegetarian... until she realized that Mom and Dad weren't going to prepare separate meals just for her.

Well actually I attempted for health reasons. With my CP sometimes my tummy just doesn't work right. It's something most "ordinary" people don't know about people like me. But I also admit I hate the way most processing plants treat their livestock. I don't believe "meat is murder" and believe me I love a good steak, but I do believe animals should be treated with care, and respect. They can feel pain and suffer, so it should be taken into account. Not to mention it's extraordinarily wasteful, bad for the enviornment, and the hormones and antibiotics are wrecking havoc on us too.

But like I said the pesticides for imported and domestically grown veggies are just as bad. Its a no-win situation. :(

Does anyone else hate grainy Iced Tea? You know how you go into a resterant you order Iced Tea and pour sugar in and it never disolves... Well it stinks when you make Iced Tea too. Simple Syrup is a marvel!!!!!!!! They always make it on food network and I thought, I'll make a mess or burn myself... Not true its easy. Equal parts sugar and water. Keep the tempature low until the sugar disolves. Iced Tea that isn't grainy!!! :happyjump:

I just wish I knew if it stored well. Food Network never tells you.

My hilarious fellow CDA friend, Jen C. has this blog she describes as “awesome/awful” called “Maybe We Shouldn’t Be Eating This”. She takes freaky recipes out of her vintage cookbooks and actually *makes* them and then photographs them and then critiques them with her acid wit. Lol My favourite is this hideously limp cylindrical mess:

eK's Friend Jen's Blog wrote:When I started looking through my recipe books, I knew I'd have to try this one. Surely, no one would dare to combine ham, mustard, bananas, and cheese into one oddly phallic appetizer unless it was secretly delicious, right?

(no.)

It’s a blog well worth bookmarking. But don’t read it at work, or your shrieks and giggles will betray your websurfing laziness. :guffaw:

I would expect it to store very well as long as you start out with a sterile bottle. If anything, the sugars might re-crystallize after awhile. You could try keeping it in the fridge if you're concerned, though.

If I were making tea and didn't want that issue, though, I'd just do it Southern style -- you brew the tea strong, put the sugar in while it's still hot, then add cold water/ice. Keep a pitcher in the fridge. Problem solved.

From a girl who LIVES in the south I can unequivilantly say that it has never, ever, worked for me. My very southern brothers say I never make the tea sweet enough. I say that if I make it the way they like it I swallow sugar... They reply you're supposed to it's SOUTHERN TEA!

ek! How are ya! It looks awful but I bet it really tastes good. Those old-fashioned recipies freak people out now but 9 times out of 10 it tastes fabulous. :D
