That's too bad. Sounds like you need to persuade your family to move to Arizona...

(Yes, I know, not very likely to happen.)

Three days later the swelling on my ankle is getting worse, not better, and I feel like crap. This is not looking particularly good. If this is a fracture I may have to jettison a couple of courses for the fall, since two of my days involve quite a bit of rushing around, and neither campus is kind to people who can't take stairs.

Perfect timing just when the garden is starting to produce more, too. I can see it through the window, but I can't get there. :(

It might not help with the garden work, but how about using a wheelchair? It's surely a more convenient way to regain some mobility than hobbling about on crutches. Not to mention that you're less likely to fall over.

I hope your campus was less "hill-y" than mine in NY was. Depending on the day it took me longer to get to class on wheels than on my crutches. I'm sorry you're feeling bad Alelou I hope things start healing fast.

If it comes to a wheelchair, I'll do it, but there's simply no way into our house without coping with stairs and I assume it's probably a good thing to get SOME exercise. (I also adjusted the crutches and I think they're fitting me better now.) Presumably this level of immobility won't last more than a week or two or three anyway. I'm more concerned that this might be some infection setting in or something since I feel so rotten. Or it might just be a coincidence. In any case, I'll go in today. I'm just waiting until the office opens because I'd rather go in with an appointment than hang out for hours in the emergency room.

Did you try to ice down the swollen ankles?

Yes, repeatedly. Elevation, rest, ibuprofen, compression bandage, splint -- I've been following all the directions.

Sounds like you're doing all the right things...Are you running a temperature, usually a bi-product of an infection.

I felt like I was all morning, but the thermometer kept disagreeing. Then again, I'm on heavy ibuprofen. That's why I'm concerned, though. Feeling a little better now, of course, now that I have an appointment, but I don't care. Between sprains and a bad achilles tendon, this ankle has been a weak point for me for a long time, and I have decisions to make about how much running around I can handle in three weeks when classes begin. I want to hear what the specialist has to say about it.

Specialist was greatly bemused by the advice I'd gotten from the emergency room, as well as the brace. Told me three days way too short in terms of "not getting worse" and that he's seen broken bones heal faster than sprains. Gave me a brace that should make walking more possible (at least partly because I can actually wear a shoe with it) and told me to do a ton of physical therapy and yes, to walk on it. Says feeling feverish is normal. So ... I'm chilling out. If I can walk, however badly, I can begin to function again.

So, spent last summer doing physical therapy (for all the good it did -- he immediately noticed my achilles) and here I go again.

Yep. No more laying about for me. Good timing, since the grandkids are due tomorrow and Jaime is already melting down from having to do everything.

Slow puttering is really frustrating, but it's better than no puttering.
