Well, you can never please everyone. Writing style to me is a lot more flexible than, say, canonically established backstories. If you're going to be writing for the characters, do your research first. Especially with Memory Alpha it's soooo easy to check the basics and often a fair bit of detail.

Jadzia that's what I meant to say about how the characters should be written but when they come off as whiny spoiled brats it's really annoying,Prynn Tenmai from the ds9 relaunch is like that and I dislike that she's gotten so much attention in the last few ds9 books.I really don't like her character at all.Too much soap opera stuff in the last few books with vaugn &Prynn was overdone & tiresome at the same time.

Oh, I haven't read any of the DS9 relaunch books. But whiny spoiled brats aren't really Starfleet officer material.

Yes definitely they're not Starfleet Material In Before Dishonor I like parts of the book except for the officers who don't like Picard's orders to defy starfleet to fight the borg, are being very stupid and caused a mutiny. They're acting like a bunch of idiots who are going to get other people killed an going to be sorry they didn't listen to Picard. He knows what he's talking about battling the Borg and how they change tatics to capture Starfleet Ships in battle.

I've read the entire Irene Kelly series up to Bloodlines. It's one of my favorites.

I didn't know her until last july. I picked the novel while traveling and I couldn't put it down. Really enjoyed her characters and the story.

She stole my title!!!

I think I already said this, but I'm still reading [i]On Combat[/b] by retired army Colonel David Grossman. Very cool.

Actually, I just so happened to have just taken the first of three close quarters combat tactics (w/ pistol) courses and there was a lot of cross-over material between the book and the class, which was very cool. Basically stuff about awareness levels and how you react in an armed engagement. It's a great read for anyone remotely interested in exactly what policemen and soldiers go through, and it's not just your typical "they have to see such horrid things", no, it's much more analytical.

A friend tells me Pamela Dean's Tamlin is back in print. Well worth the time of any urban fantasy fan. Nice Shakespeare tie-in, too

Well, I'm currently reading an interesting exploration of the impact on British culture of the British Empire (for class), but what I want to mention I haven't read. It sounds like something some people here would enjoy, though: The Hazards of Space Travel: A Tourist's Guide. It looks at all kinds of scientific problems of near-future space travel, or so I gather. Written by a physicist. If I had time I'd take it out of the library.

Sigh. I'm not quite smart enough to make it through Science of the Discworld.
