Yeah, I forgot about the burial problem. In New Orleans too, they have that problem. Above ground crepts can be used. In my both parent's case, we opted for cremation and scattering of ashes. I don't understand the 8 feet thing though. But there is some higher ground in parts of Florida. In Talahassee (panhandle) there is some higher ground, like where my sister lives. But southern Florida is very low ground. How deep was that trench, do you think? A quarter mile? An eighth of a mile? It looked about a quarter mile across, too, from the scene where Trip and Malcolm where standing next to it.
Working on a major fan fic project. Two-thirds done. Hope to put it up in the not TOO distant future.

Maybe it was due to the fact that when my mom's house was built they built the lot up as well....aka brought in a shit load of dirt and raised the property level up?
