Transportation for regular slobs

Postby Aquarius » Sun May 03, 2009 3:37 pm

I have a question, relevant to a fic or three I'm working on.

Do they still use cars in the 22nd century?

Trip makes a reference to "his first car" in an episode...yet when Archer comes to our century, he has no idea how to drive at first. Would they have changed that much, other than using safer and planet-friendlier fuels?

Or are they using something else completely?

Yeah I never understood that either. I assumed they'd use hovercraft, because they've already completed working prototypes right here and now. Maybe they use "car" as a slang word in the 22nd century. Although it's clear that people are aware of and like cars even in the 24th century. I still swoon over Tom and his 69 Camaro, both for the man and the car! If I could I'd have a 69 Camaro, or a 1967 Mustang Shelby GT 500. Yes I have a thing for muscle cars, although the new Nissan Skyline just about put me into cardiac arrest. So maybe Trip had a few classics as a teen, and worked on tinkering their engines. We know he worked on boats as a kid, same principle. Now if he also rode motor-cycles... I'd have to just fall down and die! :D

I think Trip would drive that new Skyline! Sorry I fell in love with it in Fast and Furious 4. I mean I like Dom's Charger but the Skyline was elegant, and you knew that it's engine and mechanics were in perfect harmony. Trip would appreciate the whole of that machine. As to the motorcycle... I think a classic 20's Harley. But the bigger question is could he get T'Pol in or on either one? 8)

In a deleted scene (featuring a love interest for Archer) in the episode The Expanse we do see a small car of sorts outside a bar/restaurant.

Okay, so it's sort of like our cars, then? Like with wheels and stuff?

I'll have to look that up. My faint memory tells me it resembles one of those ultra-mini cars you can sometimes see in cities.

Those are OK no self-respecting Southern man would be caught dead in one though. (I know because I actually live down here) Trip might have been Braga's favorite but he really got some things wrong when it came to that. Some things were slightly stereotypical and others he just ignored.

^I think I kind of agree. I seem to remember him talking about putting the top down so it figures it would be a convertible...and for some reason I imagine something with a big back seat. Sorry, can't help myself.

The size and shape don't matter to the general question, though. I'm more concerned with how they get around in general--wheels vs. antigravs, etc.

Jeeze the way people seem to think Trip gets around you'd think he was bloody Dirk Pitt! Clive Cussler again. I prefer to think of him as Juan Cabriello quality over quantity. Honestly let Archer be the man-whore or Travis! Although Malcolm wins by dysfunctional default. Go with anti-grav if you're not going to do an old-fashioned classic. It makes more sense in context. They have Warp Drive, wheels would probably be kept to small things like carts, wheelbarrows, bikes, and such.

You can't go wrong with a flying car. In Linda's stories the cars roll along the highway for a while and then take off into the air.

Flying cars! Haven't thought of that. I hardly know anything about cars, but there are some developments in the car industry, like hybrid cars, cars that work on electricity or water energy, that maybe were normal or classic cars in the 22th century.
I had a car in mind for Phlox, a classic pink hybrid (works on waterfuel) from the year 2080, but now I thinking more in lines of public transport. If they had flying cars, they would have shuttle buslines or not?

Why pink? Does he like Elvis? Not that there's anything wrong with Elvis.
