Re: Paxton's goal
Purity arguments of any kind are almost always tools used to manipulate the mob into acts of hatred and exclusion. Sometimes it arises out of sincere hatreds, but more often I think it's used cynically to help someone gain economic and territorial power.
I find it ironic that Jesus was probably the historical figure with the most radically anti-purity views ever (tax collectors, prostitutes, adulteresses, foreigners, the sick, the poor were to be embraced), and yet the Church created in his name has pursued its ideals of dogmatic purity with a fervor that created the Spanish Inquisition, witch burnings and hangings, pogroms, and plenty more atrocities down through the ages.
May God save us from the True Believer.

Re: Paxton's goal
I agree that it's hypocrisy, but that seemed to be lost on Paxton who was keeping himself alive with some Rigellian treatment. But he didn't see that killing a baby was just as heinous as anything he thought the aliens would do to us. In fact more so because the aliens were supposed to be attempting to weaken us so they could take over. At least we had a shot of protecting ourselves from that eventuality but an innocent baby was helpless.
Starfleet wouldn't have allowed Paxton to overtake Earth/government. Hoshi would have destroyed his base if Archer hadn't contacted her just in time. It appeared that Paxton's second and probably third in command were with him so that would have brought disarray to the ranks and slowed them down long enough for Section 31 or Starfleet Intelligence to infiltrate their organization.
Although for all the talk of our own government monitoring our communications and spying on our citizens they are doing a piss-poor job or stopping our own homegrown terrorists. So anything is possible.

Re: Paxton's goal
They might be stopping more than we know. That's the thing about really good intelligence.
On the other hand, it seems like mostly they make a big deal out of some pathetic losers they set up through an informer who gives the would-be terrorists a bunch of ideas and plans they might never have developed on their own.
I can only hope they keep an eye on the real professional ones out there better than we know.

It's not worse than being saved from being ran over by a car when you were a baby and then killing the man who saved you because he had different political opinions. But this, actually, happened.

If I'd have a penny for every time that the Police here says they have left the terrorists without leadership I will be... maybe not rich, but I will have a good amount of pennies

Re: Paxton's goal
Good Morning.
My we have touched a nerve here.
I was picked on when young because I was terribly thin. Skinny I believe the term was then. I was everyones favorite target especially the bullies. Back then one was on his own. teachers were indifferent or you were told it is your problem handle it.
I eventually had enough and spent some years building myself up until I reached an acceptable size. I was left alone then because it was too dangerous for bulllies to pick on me.
There is always people who need a reason to feel superior to others.
It can be anything just so long as it gives the bigot the feeling of superiority.
Paxton appealed to that in Humanity. He promised to make HUmans alone on earth so they would rule and then by implicaton that HUmans would go out into the Galaxy and take what they wanted.
That is a siren song that is apealing to many. those who feel they are at the margins of their society.
Native American they can say they met the boat and were her first and that anyone else are interlopers.
Hispanic can say that they had settled much of what is now the Soutwest and Califonia was a going concern long before it came under the rule of the "americans"
These things can be said but would be ignored by the bigots.

Yep.
And for all the bigots in the majority, you also get your bigots in the minority. We sure like to hang with our own tribes.

Re: Paxton's goal
Alelou. Are you a minorty bigot? Hardly believe that.
I have been on the reciving end of bigotry so I try to avoi in myself.
Strangely, there those who are bigoted against the intelligent. Perhpas jealous would be a better term but at times the two are snynomous.
Hated comes to mind also. Hatred of those who are successful, intelligent or even attrractive.
"envy turns to Spite, spite turns to hatred.
I believe that bigotory fits in thee somewhee.

Re: Paxton's goal
I hope I'm not a bigot. Anyway, I'm just a white chick so I wouldn't be a minority bigot. But I do know minority people who can be quite racist. And oh boy, you want to hear some crazy conspiracy theories?
Not that I don't understand how that can happen, but it has to end somewhere.

Re: Paxton's goal
Hey, we just elected a black guy President. If you grew up where I did, you might think anything is possible now.
He's also the first politician I've ever watched and thought, "My God, this dude could win a planetary election." Maybe those days aren't as far away as we think.

Re: Paxton's goal
What Alelou, makes you think that there are not people out there who hate haviing a black President?
If I remember correctly it was the students (colllege) that got him the nomination and probably swung the electon to him.
I know that the Seniors did not back him all that much.
Problem is, was he just a novelty and now that he is in office the Kids are going to move on to something and somone new?
College age types are fickle as hell. there have been a lot of businesses that got burned becasue they thought that the young people would hang around.
So, let us see in two years.
Actually I looked for a black woman to be elected as first black President.
Still it is a start.
Will be interesting what kinnd of a fight will come up in the Senate over the confirmaton of the PR woman for the Supreme Court.
At times it is the one who runs up and kisses you first who are the ones who
hate your guts.

Re: Paxton's goal
Of course there are people who hate it. There's been quite an uptick in violence. For every big change, you're going to get "change back" moves. But I don't see any sign that it's catching on in any significant way in the general population. It appears we mostly need to worry about highly-motivated crazies on the far fringes.
I don't mean to get into a discussion of Obama himself or his Supreme Court pick, as that would be too political for this forum. I'm just saying that the mere fact that a man of color was elected President is amazing and makes me feel more optimistic about the level of bigotry in this country than I used to be.

I find it 100% believable that in 150 years we will still have bigots and/or xenophobes among us.

Sure.
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four
And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

Re: Paxton's goal
As long as there are boarders between people there will be prejudice. Back to Paxton and Terra Prime, I have a feeling it was a sleeper movment since First Contact. Samules the Earth Ambassador was a member at eighteen, and he was in his early 50's. Also Paxton hinted that his father had also been a member. So I don't think it was his brainchild. Just the 22nd century version of the KKK, although I'm sure they'd think of themselves as more civilized. IDIOTS! Anyway it would also be a reason to use Vulcan DNA as opposed to Denobulan or any of the other races that might have had an embassy on Earth. The Andorians had one... Anyway, it's pretty obvious why they chose T'Pol as the mother, she was undoubtably the most famous Vulcan on Earth since she was on Enterprise during the Xindi war. Also since there were Terra Prime spies (plural) in Starfleet, possibly on Enterprise her close relationship with Trip was gossiped about, making him the perfect father. Despite what little background we had in the series it's obvious this plan took years of planning to perfect. It was sheer dumb luck the Xindi attacked, making it a perfect oppertunity to "come out."
PS. Would it have killed someone to say, "Hey there's going to be some prejudice in Home let's show a redshirt at a terrorist ralley." Yeah, I geuss it would have.
