Do you realize how much awful might be for T'Pol to feel deeply and daily the thoughts and the sensations of Trip?
Maybe her reticence toward Trip might be based on this.

This could be particularly true if Trip were looking at an Italian magazine.

I wrote the bond initially as a sort of emotional conduit. No words unless they were both meditating and in the white space, where they could have actual mental conversations. Now, once they got married in my stories the marriage bond became something else... an actual telepathic connection. But I tried to keep the distinction between a "mating bond" and a "marriage bond".

I have to remember narrating one day a certain conversation which occured between Trip and T'Pol during their Italian honeymoon, just after Trip did cast a look at an Italian magazine.

Trip's Subconscious, "ahh I'd like to make telepathic contact with T'Pol."

Etherial Cmmunications Operator, "Number please."

Trip's subconscious "What the hell?"

ECO "Number please."

TS, "What do you mean number please? Get me T'Pol."

ECO, "What is the number for the party you wish to contact?"

TS. "Ain't no number, it's a direct connection! She installed it herself."

ECO "That party is not on our network. Perhaps you should try long distance, I'll connect you"

TS, "No, I don't need long distance, she's right up on the bridge."

LDECO "Long distance, number please."

TS, "I don't need long distance, There isn't any damn number. I just want to contact T'Pol."

LDECO, "Perhaps you need the Interspecies Operator, I'll connect you."

IO, "Thank you for using Interspecies Communications, how may I direct your call?"

TS, "I wanna contact T'Pol."

IO, "You can contact that party via direct dial, simply select T'Pol or dial 1."

TS, "AAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!"

I don't like the bond, especially as a constant both-can-read-the-other's-thougths-at-all-times sort of thing. That would be make me very clostrophobic. I might be totally bored of my mate by now if I could read his every thought and vice versa--even if my mate was Trip!

I love Dinah's formulation. Intense feelings at intense moments, and a "third entity." There is Trip, there is T'Pol, and there is Trip and T'Pol. OK, that sounds good!

Perfect! Say the bond evolved as an emergency response mechanism. A way to send a distress call, so to speak. Then over the generations it gradually got stronger. But it never reached the level of making a couple into a true symbiosis, nor should it.

I agree to that intense thing too. I also think that they could share more when they are touching each other.
I also think that in general the bond might be something that isn't at that time very typical in Vulcan mariages, the known attitudes against mind melds and T'Pol's very vague descripiton about the bond makes me suspect that it might be something rare that only grows between those that share some deep feelings towards their mate. Something that was part of the ancient days, but in modern Vulcan is something most have only heard rumours about and those that might be able to experience it like maybe T'Pol's mom don't really talk about it to others other than very vaguely.
I see the forming of the bond needing opening your mind and heart to the other and I just cant see the Vulcans of Enterprise era doing that very easily.

I thought asking this would be interesting because we have a lot of fic writers posting. Each writer seems to have his/her own idea of how things work. I've read authors that have TnT communicating through great lengths with the bond, almost as if they had an open phone line in their heads. I've read fics in which communication is only possible if they're in direct physical contact, or even in a meld. What's interesting about it is that we have so little actual information about the bond that no story has ever come across as impossible to me. They're all possible bond manifestations, valid in their own way.

To me, as a reader, my concept of the bond is a little of bit of everything I've read. I guess I've subconsciously taken the elements I like from each story/author and created my own idea of how the bond works. I like to think that the bond functions as a constant awareness of each other in the back of their minds that lets them know up to some point their emotional state. I also like to think that they are able to communicate non-verbally, open phone line style through relatively short distances or through meditation. I don't think they have free access to each other's minds; people need their privacy. I think the bond does stuff like compelling them to seek each other. And I love fics when they get a bit possessive and protective about each other.
