Re: Good Morning

Perhaps she went to the International House of Pancakes. Everything there is always a little bit more fancy.

I gotta say, though, I do enjoy Waffle House when I'm in the South. Pecan waffles, yum!

Re: Randomness

There's a version of Linux called "Gentoo" where every piece of software comes as source code and needs to be compiled for your particular hardware. It's supposed to allow you to optimize for your machine but it's kind of like watching paint dry or sitting around watching the dryer spin wh...

Re: Randomness

Pretty much any USB mouse will plug in and work with a Mac these days. I have a fairly fancy Logitech mouse with a bunch of buttons and it works great and I never mess with the drivers or anything.

Re: Randomness

I've worked on both Macs and Windows machines, and I just find Windows cheaper. Also, once you get used to right-clicking, doing without is extremely irritating. (My Dad has a Mac, so I got to experience this firsthand while I was visiting.) I may qualify as a Mac fanboy but the first thing I do wh...

It's been fairly warm in Tokyo (around 40F) but in the interests of solidarity with all you frozen folk we went skiing :-)

Re: Its Christmas 2012

We got most of our shopping done yesterday. We also found Cinnabon here in Tokyo! Still pretty tasty. I think it's the butter-creamcheese frosting. I ordered our Christmas cards and they're currently en route from our US PO box. Not sure if we'll be able to get them sent prior to Christmas, though.

Re: Mono-cultural planets

My opinion on Northstar was that that town was way too technically sophisticated for the number of people we saw. They've got nice lumber, clocks, guns, hardware for wagons. There's an industrial base somewhere. I like Dis' point about settled planets versus those where an intelligent race evolved. ...

Mono-cultural planets

It's nearly always the case that when Star Trek (any of the flavors) introduce us to a new planet, that planet has a single language and a single culture. That's in pretty sharp contrast to Earth which has thousands of languages and hundreds if not thousands of cultures. Aside from lazy writing, wha...

Funny - I looked Mira Furlan up on IMDB and found out she was also Rosseau on Lost. Never made the connection before.

Re: Randomness

When I was a kid, back in the early 70's, I remember there being a day when our elementary school went on lockdown because there was supposed to be a sniper nearby. One of my friends suggested we hide in a trash can (bullet proof, dontcha know) and arm ourselves with our plastic sporks and pop out w...

I missed it back during the summer, but, yes, I remember Winchester Cathedral, Asso. That used to be on the radio a lot when I was a kid.
