Re: Non-TnT pairings
The Bronte sisters wrote under male pen-names because back then writing was a "man's occupation" Even Jane Austin used a male pen-name. So it wouldn't surprise me if a man used a female pen-name because fanfic is considered a "woman's thing."
I'm not paranoid, I take everyone at their word when they say they are who they are. But to say people don't lie is a little niaeve. OK how the heck do you spell that word????????

It's also possible that people might want to hide their ages, in case other people think them too young to write there stories, or again not want their friends/family know that they a grown adult do this.
I did. I am enterpriseScribe (G rated) and enterprikayak (NC 17). But I found people on the HoT board talking to both of me, and so I had to adopt 2 forum names to answer, and it got really confusing.
So when HoT dissolved, I came out of the closet (for sanity's sake) and now I am enterpriseScribe on youtube, and enterprikayak at Tris.
I used to worry (when I was 24) that people would judge me for writing nc17, but now I've popped out two babies and I'm in my 30s and I understand now that if anyone has a problem with it, it's likely due to their own hangups. My nc stuff isn't gratuitous or anything.

Yeah and what year was that, WG? And how easy was it for a woman to be taken seriously in the publishing world back then? (RE the Brontes)
And yes, I'd lie about my age to read smut if I had to. But that has no bearing on the fact that in fandom--*in general*--it's female-dominated.
Yes, it can happen. Yes, I'm sure it's happened even in fandom. But zeroing in on the exceptions all the time doesn't take away from what generally passes for "normal" in a situation. We aren't quoting hard statistics here, just looking at generalities in the dynamics of fan writing.
Re: Non-TnT pairings
The guy I knew who wrote under the name Vanessa Royale - loved to "out" himself to his fans at romance novel conventions. They so often didn't believe him that he was who he said he was. Again, I knew these guys through the fact I took a fiction writing class taught by one of them at the New School. One of them told me he wanted to use a male pen name - and it was not allowed. So, reverse prejudice exists in publishing, too.
The funny thing is. . .you are right Aquarius. . .there is so many different writers in fandom, even the ENT fandom . . .that their are fics for nearly every sensibility, gender not withstanding. I would never want to insult men by saying they were incapable of writing romance or smut - that's silly. And I think women can write action and adventure and humor and whatever would be consider "male" type writing. Which, as you say, is just utter nonsense to ascribe one or the other. Some people think SciFi is a male dominated genre. Those people should pick up Mary Doria Russell and Octavia Butler.

Aquarius wrote:Again, I beg to differ. Our fearless leader Elessar writes beautiful romance and hot smut--no contrived behavior or dialogue, no "ick factor."
In the Han/Leia world, Darksean comes to mind.
And neither of them write "like women" (whatever the crap THAT is even supposed to mean???), but as a woman reading it, I do feel it was written just *for* me as I hang on every word.
And as honeybee astutely pointed out, "doormat", like smut, is in the eye of the beholder. And instead of painting women and/or what they like to write with such a broad brush all the time, why not judge individual works on their individual merits and leave whether or not a woman wrote it out of it?
Just to make sure I'm not trying to start a gender slugging here. My initial idea was to address WarpGirls "fear" of people posing under a false gender. I think a male posing as a girl or a woman posing as a man would "give away the clue" sooner or later. I noticed some general differences in the stories as written by gender, but of course there's always the exception to the rule.

Thanks for making my point Ek!
Aquarius I'm not saying that fanfic isn't female dominated. I just think there are probably more men, young people, old people, then is commonly known. I only brought it up because the idea intrigues me. I'm not trying to determine what is normal in fandoms.
And I am not afraid of people lie in a fandom about anything. Either way live and let live. I merely believe that it probably happens more than anyone would think.

Re: Non-TnT pairings
I think that if you really want to create a whole elaborate false identity complete with fake gender in fanfic land, which is already protected by fake names, you're probably going to be some psycho troll for whom actually writing fanfic is a whole lot less important than whatever personality disorder is driving you.

And I suppose y'all will freak if I say I'm a second string linebacker for UVA. Bummer and I thought we were all to be so accepting.
