There is a female alien guest character in a TOS episode with a first name very similar to mine--not a very common one at all--though spelled and pronounced slightly differently. I used to like to imagine my mom got my name from that, but no such luck, she was just totally random when she named me. 8)

See, it works as long as you think that would've been cool. It could backfire spectacularly if someone picked a Trek name for their child and the child was mortified. (I'm especially picturing the teenage years here.) Unless they went with a mainstream name. You could call your son James without a problem, but naming your daughter Uhura would raise eyebrows.

Obviously, I like the name Jadzia. I used to think it would be a good name for a girl, but then I sort of grew up and realized I didn't want to inflict that on a child. (Much to my mother's relief on behalf of any potential future granddaughters.) A cat, maybe.

I love the name Jadzia too, but also wouldn't inflict it on any other daughters I might have. I named my dog Dax though! (Jadzia really wouldn't have worked, since he's a boy lol)

My husband suggested the name B'Lanna for our daughter - back in the days when we watched Voyager. Luckily for her, it took us a while before she was born and now she has one beautiful ordinairy Western name and one Japanese, both with great meaning.

Reminds me of the Trek con I attended with jT and the woman who continually got up to make sure every speaker there heard about her teenage son, whom she'd named something like James Tiberius Kirk Picard -- I can't remember the exact name. Ay yi yi.

That's the kind of thing that really makes me look around and wonder what the hell I'm doing at a Star Trek convention...

I think it's great that people are inspired by fictional characters, actors, whatever. Most of the time it works out cool. My freshman year of college, I lived on the same floor with this guy named Scott--who *was* named after Scotty. But...it works because his parents picked something that wouldn't get him beat up!

Not sure if it happens in this age but once Chinese Children wre allowed to pick their first name when they were six. I wonder if in the U.S. that was allowed how many fictional characters names would be used and how many Movie Hero's would pop up. Can you see many Indiana's?

Pick their own name at age six? As teenagers they would regret naming themselves "SpongeBob" back when they were six. :guffaw:
Working on a major fan fic project. Two-thirds done. Hope to put it up in the not TOO distant future.

My son, who is six, informed me two weeks ago that he wanted to change his first name to "Kowalski." Kowalski is one of the penguins on Penguins of Madascar. Our last name is Polish, so I thought that was kind of funny.

Just yesterday he said he wanted to be called "Storm Trooper."

Thenk God that's not a culutral tradition here.

Oh that's funny! So . . . my random question is, I realize my signature is obnoxiously big. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Wife and I read labels like they are Gosphle. Calories, Fats, Carohydrats, sugars. but the killer is always the SODIUM.

There is so much sodium in processed foods. Fresh food, no. wife tries to use Fresh as much as possible but cannot always do so.

So on occasion Processed Foods. The sodium in that stuff is amazing.

There is one thing I adore and that is Southwest Rice. A half package contains almost 1200 grams of Sodium. I can (if allowed, which I am not) eat a whole package at a sitting. One can get a whole months worth of sodium in a package of processed food. Canned Vegatables the same. Frozen not much sodium there but sometimes a Can is easier.

Having High blood Pressure, diabetes I am all too aware of what I can eat and not eat.I find that there is more I cannot eat than I can because of all of that damned sodium.

It is ridiculous, and a very good reason to cook from scratch. You might find that a rice cooker would make it easier to do something like that from scratch -- just add in a lot of the non-salt seasonings a real recipe for Southwest rice would use. The other trick is to just not use the whole seasoning packet they give you, if it comes separately.

I'm puzzled by the whole sodium issue, though, because Asian food strikes me as generally loaded with salt (and quite a lot of sugar when you're cooking it from scratch), yet Asians have extremely low rates of cardiovascular disease. So I can't help thinking it's also a matter of the way we pack the extra pounds on in general, or maybe the amount of fat that comes from dairy, or something else peculiar to the Western diet.

Italians eat wonderful Pasta dishes that are loaded with Carbohydrates but they too have a very low incident of Heart Problems. Maybe it is the amount of Seafod they also eat. I love Pasta but t'aint good for me.
