Something Typical

Postby Asso » Sat Apr 26, 2008 8:18 pm

Jt said elsewhere that the gorgeousness and the fullness of this board are lying in its richness of different cultures.
I agree with her totally.
Here I found a big deal of people who share with me TnT passion, but sensibilities and points of view are different, that’s an enormous richness.
This thing gave me an idea.
Do you have something you think typical of your country or your town?
Something that you would be glad if it may be known by other people of other countries?
I think so.
At least, I have many things of my country that I would like to share with you.
So I begin, hoping some of you will follow me.
You know I was born in Turin, and I wish to make you aware of what is a TORET. (Small bull)
In Italian language TORO = BULL.
Toret is a typical expression in Piedmontese language than literally means small bull, bullock. In metaphorical sense the word is used to indicate a drinking fountain.
Torets, that is fountains bull shaped, are a special feature of Turin. Plainly the bull was chosen because it is somewhat the Turin's symbol. (Turin: Bull city)
Earlier (at the beginnings of '900) they were done with stone. Then they were realized with cast iron.
They are spread above all in the city parks, but also along the roads in the center and in periphery.
They are poor fountains but very much precious.

Nice idea, Asso.

How does one put a photo in one of these posts? I could think of a thing or two from this neck of the woods that I would share.

Thanks, Alelou.
Well, I think you might scan your photos, and then might use photobucket, for example.
But maybe that's a little bit complicated.
Does someone have a better idea? :?

Photobucket's the best way to do it because it's free. Basically, Alelou, you go to photobucket.com and setup an account just like you would for a forum account like this one, where you pick a username and password, and it's free. You have to provide an email address, I think. Then you are allowed to upload photos for free (video too) so that then when you post here, you post the address that the image is stored at, on photobucket. And photobucket makes it really easy. Once you've uploaded a photo, it has 4 or 5 sets of formatted code already produced for you below the image so that all you have to do is CLICK that code and it will automatically be placed into your "copy" clipboard (like when you Control+C or Edit->copy) and then you paste it into a post here.

It has 4 or 5 sets because there are 4 or 5 ways of linking to an image. For these boards, you want the one that starts with [IMG]

It sounds complicated just explaining in words but once you setup your account and put an image up, I think you'll see what I'm talking about.

I have hardly gotten anything either. Maybe just stuff when they tell you they've upgraded their services with new features and things like that.

Okay, Asso, so this is a waterfall the next town up from us. It's this incredibly lovely little place just off the road that only locals seem to know about.

Pittsburgh is the City of Bridges. Here are four of them I often use to get to around:

This is Valparaiso, which is our biggest port
Image

Image

It's surrounded by hills, so people use lifts (ascensores) to get to downtown. They're pretty old and very cheap. It's something you have to do if you ever visit around here:

Up the hills you can find these views:

I grew up in Viña del Mar which is Valparaiso's sister city. And there we have a flower watch:

If you drive to the beach, you'll come across this view:

I could show you a picture of a corn field. But right now they are all just mud puddles. There is a used car lot two blocks from my house...

I'm very glad to see the images you sent here.
I was sure the pictures of your neck of the woods were able to make me share something of your feelings. In other words, something of what you are. :)
That waterfall is very beautiful, Alelou, and I found the views of Pittsburgh, of Valparaiso, and of Viña del Mar very, very attractive. :D
But, why do you say "boring beach", TPoptarts? A beach can be all, but surely not "boring"!
I wait for your pictures of corn field, blacknblue.

Here are some photos from Charlotte, North Carolina, where I live.

In this pic, you can see Charlotte's skyline. The big buildings in the background are the Bank of America Building and Wachovia. Charlotte's a big banking city. In the foreground is Bank of America stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers!
