Re: Miscellaneous truths
All right, which psalm is that? That sounds worse than just confusing them to me.
Then again, to quote George Bernard Shaw, "No man ever believes that the Bible means what it says: He is always convinced that it says what he means."

Re: Miscellaneous truths
I don't know what psalm that is, but I believe it. The Old Testament is pretty grim. You've got God telling the Israelites to go slaughter "everything that urinates against a wall" to take possession of their promised land (ie: kill all the males who are old enough to stand up") several times in one chapter, and elsewhere the returnees from Babylonian captivity are commanded to "cast off" the foreign wives they took while in exile PLUS their children by those wives. And then there's the fact that the priests are killing rams, sheep, and calves every five minutes for blood sacrifices. It's not till the New Testament where you get to the hearts, flowers, and forgiveness.
But I digress.

)
It's not a psalm. It's a saying of Jesus, where He says talks about treating your enemies. Out of my head "Love your enemies and be kind to the one who treat you unjust. Because God lets it rain over good and bad people. So when some one put a curse on you, bless him, so you will heap firey coals on his head." The firey coals in this context means that your kindness makes your wrongdoiner so uncomfortable he will think about his actions, because he expected that you would treat him the same way he has treated you.
As for the Bible, OT and NT: it's context - context - context. I am always surprised people take one line out of a book (which has many lines in the other books) of the Bible and make a whole theory out of it.
For example: The saying "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" - is from a chapter about paying back (in money!) what you have lost by the other. So if your neighbour causes you to lose a cow, he has to buy you a new one. If you have lost a sheep by the action of your neighbour, you get a new sheep. When your neighbour (you have a very bad neighbour ) make you lose an eye, he has to pay an amount of money for the loss of income, because you lost the eye etc.
That's what an eye for an eye means. And I haven't talked about of the figures of speech that people take literary!
But I probably bore you! What about these miscellaneous truths: "The sun is always shining behind the clouds" and "When you finally go to the doctor, your pain is suddenly gone."

No the Bible says "heap firey coals on your enemies head" in Psalms... The gist being that your kindness will purify them like hot coals over melted metal. Confusing them is just a bonus!

Re: Miscellaneous truths
Hmm. I googled it and got to Proverbs and also to Romans (which would be Paul rather than Jesus, wouldn't it?). Perhaps I missed a gospel citation. Seems that there is quite a bit of debate about the meaning, including a theory that this is literally a good thing because people needed to transport their fire from place to place. Ah, you gotta love exegesis.
But here's the next line in Proverbs, and it applies well to MY life: "As a north wind brings rain, so a sly tongue brings angry looks."

Re: Miscellaneous truths
You're right, Alelou, when I wrote it down I was thinking that the expression probably would surface on other places in the Bible as well.
But I had to rush to get my kids from school... and get you to that old wisdom that when you think you still have some minutes before getting late, you mostly are too late!

Re: Miscellaneous truths
my universal truth of the day is, that the worst dishes you've ever known are never going to go away
Just walked by a restaurant that serves a dish, which was rather "popular" in East Germany. It is basically fried Blutwurst (blood saussage) with potatoes and it looks like this :
The colloquial name in Germany is Tote Oma (Dead granny). That stuff was served at least twice a month when I went to school, which meant I went hungry at least twice a month. I just can't eat something that looks as if someone diarrhea'ed on my plate

Re: Miscellaneous truths
*shrug* I'd eat it if it tastes good. Who cares what it looks like? What's in blood sausage? Sounds interesting.
Another miscellaneous truth: Cajuns will generally eat anything that doesn't eat them first.

Main ingredients are blood (usually pig), pork rind and in some variants, brain. *shudder*
Nearest british equivalent is black pudding,
