I'm a total Edgar Rice Burroughs geek, and I just saw the movie.

I see the previews and I can't figure out what it's all about! Is the guy from ancient times, and gets put on Mars? Or is he a guy from our time who likes wearing loin cloths? I can't beg my mom to take me if I don't understand the plot.

It's Edgar Rice Burrough's "Princess of Mars". Don't tell me you've never read the books! John Carter is a Confederate soldier who goes out west after the Civil War and ends up getting transported to Mars, which has air and aliens and stuff. It's a classic of SF literature.

I actually hadn't read the books (my introduction to SF was at the (heh) SF public library and apparently Edgar Rice Burroughs didn't get into the SF section because I read everything in it) but they're so old they're out of copyright and you get them free for your Kindle on Amazon or the Gutenberg project has them. So I went through and read them recently.
Anyhow, the reason he wears a loin cloth is because everyone on Mars runs around mostly naked. The Earth part is set shortly after the civil war.

Yeah. In the books everyone's clothing consists basically of a leather harness they hang their weapons on. In the books he also appears on Mars completely naked and pretty much stays that way until he earns his leathers. I guess they wanted to keep their PG rating.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but devoured the books when I was younger. I'm more upset that Dejah Thoris wears too much clothing in this...

But the costumes are so gorgeous! I hear that there's already talk of nominating this film for an Academy Award for best costuming.
I did like their casting choices. The woman who plays Dejah Thoris is absolutely stunning, and yet so athletic and muscular that you can believe her fight scenes. I hate it when filmmakers cast these skinny little girls and then put swords in their hands and expect us to believe not only that they can lift the darn things, but that they actually know what to do with them. This woman looks like she knows what to do with a sword and she looks amazing doing it.
The actor they picked for John Carter, on the other hand, looks rangy and underfed, exactly the way you'd expect a Civil War era Confederate cavalryman to look. If he had looked like Jason Momoa it wouldn't have been nearly as believable. Not that any of this story would be expected to be even remotely believable, but still. I like some structure to my fantasy.

Well, to be honest, that of Edgar Rice Burroughs I do not think it can properly be called science fiction.

Edgar Rice Burrough's Barsoom series is technically fantasy, I suppose, even though he did make an effort to include the science of that time period. The movie is definitely SciFi, though. They changed it to bring just enough technobabble science into the picture for it to qualify, IMO.

I've just seen the movie, and am a bit torn. By itself it is a good, perhaps even very good, classic sci-fantasy adventure. But the ERB purist in me would have wished for a more faithful adaptation of the source material (and no, I don't mean a more scantily clad Dejah Thoris, though that wouldn't have hurt). For that, I like the Dynamite Comics version that came out last year.
Still, I was entertained, but the changes makes me wonder how a sequel would be handled (if there is one, I fear it won't make enough money to motivate one), since the Therns are rather different from in the books. They've already been to Iss.
But I must admit that Lynn Collins's Dejah Thoris was indeed yummy! Imagine if she'd looked like this (link never mind...)
