Since both combatants are otherwise committed, I fail to see the logic in combat. 
Rather, each should allow the other to express admiration without hostility. If they behave themselves, the fair maiden might choose to reward each of them with a lovely smile (and send them home to their wives) rather than offer stern reproof for their temerity. Or not.

Perhaps their belligerence is the product of an over-indulgence of Christmas cheer?

It was usual in former times - perhaps more gentle than these ones - that the troubadours vied with one another, certainly not with the sword but with beauty and civility of the word and music, for the eyes, beautiful and bright, of a woman, only to extoll her beauty and her grace and without ulterior motives.
And none of the contenders had "serious" intentions: love (as the one I have for my wife) is something else.
Civility, the real one, is beauty (Vulcans docent). When one behaves in a way he thinks being gentle and civil - for love of beauty, for example - never realizes (can not do it, it is impossible to him) what not nice (uncivilized) can be seen in his acts and his words.
Also, please, one must not forget that I am an heir to the culture of "courtly love" that inevitably marks my own culture and my way of being.
I am confident that SB knows of what I speak.
