For at least a month now there seems to be an unusually high number of guest users, in fact over the last two weeks I've never seen the number fall below five. Could someone please have a look at the access log? Considering that traffic on our site is rather moderate, such a constantly high number of guest-accesses makes it probable that we're being sniffed out by bots.

I don't think you can do that. That's a job for one of the guys, who run the web servers. It is rather unusual to have 5-10 guests constantly at any time of the day.

Are all bots such awful things? I sometimes have TS forum posts come up in google searches, and I would consider that a plus for us. (Of course, these days google is probably also creepily aware of my tendencies to show up at this site and tailoring its results accordingly.)

Google and Bing, the two biggest search engines are visible as registered users. Bots showing up as guest users are most likely here trying to harvest email adresses, links and other informations.
