Have you looked into whether www.stopforumspam.com might have a filter for PHPBB forums they way they do for Simple Machines Forums? If nothing else, you may want to make registration by Admin approval only and use the website itself to look up usernames, IPs and email addresses. Or you could just shut down registration altogether and leave instructions for people to email you to set up an account manually.

And here comes the next one :? Why the hell now and so consistently? Could that have anything to do with the faceborg stuff?

EDIT:

Got an idea, how to deal with those MoFo's: Image

They were pretty persistent with my forum, too. Actually they're still trying to register even though it's been turned off.

It was yesterdays spammer as well. Why the heck wasn't that waste of skin and organs banned right away? :?

Gotta love the latest signup Ionindynone, too. The profile is one big porn ad. I'm thoroughly getting sick of it. Maybe we should really think about more drastic measures and fight back with more effective methods.

Securing or disabling the new account signup would seem like a sensible first step. I hope somebody will get round to doing this soon.

I agree. Until a better solution can be found, I think temporarily disabling new registrations would be the best we could do.

Ok, I'm going to say something that might step on some people's toes, but I'm sick of the latest nuisances around here. I just checked the latest "new registration" and it is the third 'person' in the last week that comes here with a link in his/her profile that promotes Faceborg, so getting rid of that social soul-striptease shit around here should be first on the list, bacause I'm sure that's what lead those MoFo's here in the first place. For days now me and others have asked to stop accepting new registrations, but all that happens is that twice a day, sometimes even more often, some poor mod has to delete a gazillion of spam-posts, which promote some gambling site or some diatribe posts promoting fascist views on east european countries.
What else do we have to do until something happens? Do we need to beg? I understand perfectly that this site is run on a volounteer basis. I've been doing that myself for 12 years now with a board in Germany. Myself and others have offered help more than once. It was always politely dismissed with the explanation that there are people capable of doing the job. Pardon my bluntness, but it doesn't look like it, since some sad bozos from Russia and Poland have been harassing us for a week now and we do nothing to repell them.
As it is now, I don't see much reason to stay around here, as currently we're getting more spam posts per day than normal posts in a week. :(

I understand your frustration, Kotik, but everybody involved with site administration has a full time day job and/or significant other responsibilities that take precedence over TriS spam troubleshooting. Hopefully now that the weekend is here someone who knows more than I do about such things will have more time to devote to the problem. Don't despair. The Boss and his buddies are well aware of the situation. Thanks for your patience and your eagerness to help.

I'm not out to cause trouble, Dis, but I'm getting really frustrated. I know the phpbb software, which is used for our forum. Restricting or turning off registration is a 10 minute job - why isn't it done? we can then look for better ways to handle it. We have like what? Three signups in half a year? If we turn off the registration for a week we'll hardly die, but at least the effin' spamming will stop. If we stay that open much longer, word will get around and the spammers will only get bigger in numbers. I dearly hope that something will be done.

Talking about the day job. I can perfectly understand that. But that makes all those declines of help even harder to understand. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand, that Elessar puts somewhat more importance on his upcoming wedding than to keep spammers out of here, but hell, I wouldn't offer to help if I didn't know that I got the time to do it. My next project starts on February 1st, so I'm at at home for 10 more days with a lot of time on my hand. Why not accept that? It would give the boss time to enjoy the wedding bliss and solve our problems. Somehow I don't understand it :dunno:
