Justice system in Ent area and Star fleet
Does any of you have any thoughs about the justice system in Star fleet?
I know that mostly the captain 'disciplines" his or her crew and that Admirals make the most important descions. In Voy Star fleet seems to have a sort of military justice system and prison (remember Tom Paris), but I think that this was not very developed in the Ent area?
Is there something like Intern Affairs in Star Fleet? Is a Star fleet member jugded by the justice system of his country or planet? What kind of punishment? Any ideas?

Re: Justice system in Ent area and Star fleet
Well, they make references to 'court martial' so I would assume it's a typical military-style system.

Re: Justice system in Ent area and Star fleet
TNG had an episode with a court-martial, "The Drumhead." And I do recall that it's standard for a captain who loses his/her ship to be court-martialled, also from TNG.
Alas, I can't think of anything from ENT era. Which means that you have a lot of wiggle room.

Re: Justice system in Ent area and Star fleet
We know that Starfleet in the ENT era both has a security service and an intelligence service. It stands to reason that they would have a JAG system as well. So Starfleet members would be tried by a court-martial, unless they committed the offense while off duty.
She's got an awfully nice bum!

The thing that confuses my is why Dr. Soong was apparently sitting in a Starfleet prison during the augment episodes.

That is strange. That would mean Starfleet had more power and influence in the ENT area then I thought. The JAG-think is a very good idea and I can not believe I did not think of Drumhead.

In fact, the sensation is of a militarist society.
Which might explain the Vulcans' distrust.
Who knows... the necessities due to recent war.
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to

Good point! You just given my a new idea .
I always thought that the United Earth was not so united, maybe in part of Earth there still were some fighting. It would explain that the crew of Enterprise is not so diverse (where are the scientists from India, Australia, Chinese people, continental Europeans, even Hoshi is not really Japanese), Archer bigot attitude and the fact that after the Xindi attack United Earth only send one ship, Enterprise.

Re: Justice system in Ent area and Star fleet
I would have to agree with that -- it seems even more dominated by American white males of European descent than some of the American cities I've lived in. Somebody, I think Lieutenant Keen, has fanfic where China does not take part in United Earth -- that sort of thing could conceivably make sense in a post-war scenario.

Re: Justice system in Ent area and Star fleet
Especially when you compare ENT with the much more international crew of TOS, African, Russian, Japanese, American and Vulcan of course...

Re: Justice system in Ent area and Star fleet
I don't know. Did Sulu really seem anymore Japanese than Sato? Isn't he supposed to be Japanese American anyway?
It's an American show is what it comes down to. But it seemed like the movies and the more recent series put more effort into diversifying. Seems to me they should have at least tried harder with all those secondary characters. We didn't need a Jeffrey Pierce. I really think they used aliens more than East Asians or Hispanics and I can't recall a single African name.

Re: Justice system in Ent area and Star fleet
Surely Star Trek is soaked with - how can I say? - with "Americanism"? (No offense made).
And nevertheless there must be something universal, in it, if we think about its popularity in the whole world.
Anyway, I wasn't thinking of that with my words.
I was thinking of the post-war scenario.

Uhura spoke Swahili and supposed to be African in TOS. And yes, I think Sulu made more sense to me as a Japanese than Sato, just a observation. She came across to me as an Korean-American, maybe because she looked and acted a lot like a Korean-American friend of mine and not like a lot of Korean or Japanese friends I know. I liked her character in the beginning, I think they could have done a better job developing her character and her science. It is not very realistic to have a translator machine translating word for word, you need a feel of the culture as well if you translate. Sato fitting in that role.
At the end, I stopped caring about her character, esp. after her very nice remarks in *the_abomination*.
I do not mind the characters and (American) background of the characters we had in Ent - (but I do think the writers could have done more with the background, like the boomer background of Travis.)
But getting back on trek, It is a nice way of looking at the crew and the beginning of Star fleet - like Asso said - from a post-war POV.
