Romulans

Postby Linda » Fri May 18, 2007 1:38 pm

Anybody come across anything suggesting the Romulans were a separate race before they left Vulcan? It does not seem logical to me that they would develop the ridges on their foreheads in only a couple of thousand years since they left Vulcan. Any references available on this? Or just personal opinions?

I don't know where I might have picked this up, but I adher to the theory that during their exodus those "who marched beneath the raptor's wings" (the ones that would one day become Romulans) encountered some native species (like the Debrune that was mentioned on TNG I believe) during their route, and there was some inter-breeding, resulting in some Romulans acquiring the ridges.

Don't forget that, based on TOS, we also know that some Romulans don't have ridges...

Remember that until VOY, nobody knew that some Vulcans were black. It si entirely possible that some Vulcans have ridges.

Good! Some theories to think about here. Needed some input so I can complete my Raptor fic.

The Romulan Ambassador in ST6 didn't have ridges either. Wink

How large a gene pool did they start with, I wonder. Maybe the ridges are due to a recessive gene brought to the fore (head) by inbreeding.

an appropriate ingredient, don't you think?

Perhaps it might explain something about their bloody-mindedness, too.

Hey! We are not bloody-minded!

Uh ... I mean, Romulans aren't bloody-minded, of course.

Does that mean Rrrrigil has Rrrrridges? Resessive trait? Inbreeding? I suppose there might be a bit of inbreeding if the group that left Vulcan at Surak's time was small. Anyone come across any canon/non-canon info on the size of the population that left?
