Phlox

Postby WarpGirl » Mon May 18, 2009 11:29 pm

I can't believe there is no Phlox thread, there is a Travis one for God's sake! OK let's talk about Phlox... Does anyone get the feeling that sometimes he has a hard time on a ship full of humans as T'Pol does? I do.

Once in a while, as in Dear Doctor. But mostly he's fascinated. He's a pretty adventurous and curious being. So's his wife, come to think of it... :D

I missed "Stigma" during the Trekkathon. But I look forward to seeing the lovely Fezzel in action! And I'm sure I'll love Trip more when he resists, even if Phlox and Fezzel find it odd. Too bad T'Pol doesn't get to see it! She's too busy with Archer! <gag> I'll bet I'll want to see Fezzel again, too bad it doesn't happen.

She's hoot, and masterfully played.

At the end of the ep, Feezal and Phlox put their heads together, say "Humans!" and have little giggle. Denobulans obviously think humans are quaint.

Well we can be. I would have loved to see Phlox actually meet his two youngest sons. We know that they hold on to ancient prejudices, but I really think Phlox and his species should have been more developed in series. I disregard "Dear Doctor" for many many reasons. The main one being scientific inaccuracy. Still I think Plox had the potential to be as good of a Doctor to the show as "Doc" on VOY or Beverly on TNG. Too bad. What would *you* liked to have seen?

I like him better than the EMH. :) And the EMH is my favorite VOY character. :)

WOAH! Well my favorite is Tom so... Oh heck Trip can't beat him. Sorry I tried but, I've loved Robbie McNiell since "First Duty" it's hopless. And I was 7! Back to Phlox I think it would have been interesting if they had given him more challenging stuff to work out. Instaed they start something than stop. Like the Pa'Nar, so annoying.

How about Affliction? I especially liked his interaction with the Klingon doctor, and how they conspire together to outwit both Klingon commanders. I thought the the Klingon doctor was very well done, but that was no surprise given the actor who played him.

Unfortunately I haven't seen much of season 4 yet, only the "Vulcan Arc" and the "Augment Arc." I've just started the beginning of season 2, but I saw some of it on the Trekkathon. And I saw most of the Xindi Arc but not all. I am SLOWLY catching up. But I'm more irritated by most episodes than anything. Still I love most of these characters, Archer and Travis are the exceptions. I don't dislike Travis but he's boring.

Last night I put the audio commentary on "Dead Stop" while I did my weights. The writers were commenting about why the alien repair station would choose Travis of all the crew and they joked that either it must have determined that he had the greatest brain capacity on board (here I believe they laughed) or he was the one who had the least to do and was least likely to be missed (another snicker)...

Yes, Phlox was good in "Affliction" and "Divergence" but "Dear Doctor" was bad, morally and scientifically. I shall not detail my rant about Trek writers assuming evolution is written in stone lest I provoke a firestorm, but it irks me. On the morality front, though - well, that's fair game. Phlox gets on his high horse and decides that he gets to choose who lives and dies. Because he knows science and how the universe works. (Also, the whole thing where we're supposed to see Archer as an Enlightened Leader because he goes along is just as bad. Possibly worse.) So Phlox is basically shaping the future of a planet and its people according to his view of the universe. And worst of all pretending he's objective. Argh.

There was an interesting pair of lines:
"They don't have movies where you come from, do they?"
"We had something similar a few hundred years ago, but they lost their appeal when people discovered their real lives were more interesting."

Clearly, Denobulan lives are more interesting than, say, mine. ;) But with three spouses I suppose it makes sense.

Overall, though, I find this one reprehensible.

I agree, about everything you've said. But whether you believe in evolution or not; they got it wrong. Evolution isn't supposed to work that way, and if you're going to treat it as "fact" then get it right. I know it's TV but come on. As for Phlox being "immoral" IDK, I agree he's done some stupid things but maybe that's just because he's alien. Doesn't make it right, but I'm against humanizing aliens too much. It defeats the purpose of having aliens. I'll see that whole shebang nest Tuesday. And let you know.

:) Well, to quote Phlox himself, "Hippocrates was not Denobulan." :)
