Re: Fix Enterprise "canon" with a drabble challenge

Postby Asso » Mon Aug 01, 2011 9:26 pm

It jumped in my brain this little thing.
Try to read it, please, forgiving my very poor English.
Maybe it can please you.
And remember: it is improvised.

I do not understand.
Normal.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
When you have finished rattling off your kindnesses, would you want to be kind enough to explain?
You are a Q, you should know everything.
You also are a Q, you should know how to explain all.
Put it this way: sometimes the Qs must give up.
Yeah.
Humans are too incomprehensible.
Yeah.
Not to mention the Vulcans.
Yeah.
If, then, we put together a human male with a Vulcan female ...
…All becomes even more incomprehensible.
Yeah.
But tell me if there was a need to kick up such a fuss.
Yeah.
Such a mess.
Yeah.
Putting on such a mise-en-scène.
Yeah.
Pretending to die in such an idiotic way.
Yeah.
He.
Yeah.
And she? Not even demanding to see him.
Eh perforce. How could she see a dead man who there wasn't?
And expecting, both of them, that people could drink that were not together, that - think what! - they had left each other!
But why?
Incomprehensible.
Incomprehensible.
Everyone knew they were the happiest of couples.
Everyone was happy of that.
Yeah.
So, why manufacturing that absurd hologram…
…To make people believe the unbelievable…
…Taking advantage of the credulity of Riker...
…And that of Troi…
…Just as they had heard from Daniel.
That Riker and Troy were two dupes?
This.
Yeah.
And a little shallow, in addition.
Yeah.
Neither of these two fatheads had been caring to check if they were historical data.
Yeah.
And they touted everything as if it were true.
Favouring - this is clear - the plans of Trip and T'Pol.
Yeah
Why making people believe such nonsense?
Incomprehensible.
Incomprehensible.

Q?
Yes, Q?
What do you think?
Of what?
Could it be true?
What?
That those two, I mean Trip and T'Pol, have done it so as to...?
To?
To make those 'what-d’you-call-them'...
Which 'what-d’you-call-them'?
You know, those writers who are also called Fans, those who write Fanfics ...
Oh, I know who you mean, those 'possessed and obsessed' who spend days and nights writing about Trip and T'Pol.
Yes, them.
Understood. So?
To make them able to write tons of fanfics…
… in the teeth of how things have gone for real?
Exactly.
Mh, I don't know.
Q, think about this.
About what, Q?
People enjoy love angst.
Okay, so?
What sort of angst could you find in a couple that lived the happiest of lives by loving each other much more than anyone else?
Mh...
And then, this is perfectly in character. In their characters.
What do you mean?
They loved make people happy.
Uh?
Try to find people happiest than those who had the possibility to read the mass of beautiful stories that have been written thanks to their sham.
That's true.
I think they, who were so happy, wanted to make people happy at least a fraction of how they were.
That's comprehensible.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Q?
Yes, Q?
What do you think, should we reveal all this?
I don't think.
Why?
People could stop writing stories about them.
Horrible!
Yes, horrible.
So, mum's the word!
Mum's the word.
Goodbye, Q.
Goodbye. Where do you go?
To read some beautiful story about Trip and T'Pol.
I think I will follow your example.
Good reading, Q.
Good reading also to you, Q.
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

Hmmm. Okay, two short ones.

T'Pol opened her eyes, and found that instead of being primly seated in a meditative pose, she was in the somewhat undignified pose of face first on one of her pillows, arms parallel to her torso, buttocks raised high in the air.
The shower was running. She frowned, then rose from her position on the floor, idly noting that someone had put a blanket over her shoulders at some point. Presumably before she had managed to land face first on the floor. There was...a moment of existential confusion, as the very odd dream of her imposed sleep cycle faded into nothing but memory. She stood, and walked over to the bathroom.
"Oh, hey T'Pol. Sorry. Been working three shifts in a row, thought I'd use the shower before I put you in bed proper. Didn't wanna wake ya."
She blinked, frowning slightly at her mate. There had been... "I had the strangest dream."
"...Vulcans don't dream. Do they?"
She raised an eyebrow. "We rarely remember our dreams. Some have taken that to mean that we don't. But that would be highly illogical, considering we are thinking beings with complex thought patterns and elaborate memory centers."
"Huh. Well, maybe you should start a dream journal?" He stepped out of the shower, and she took a brief moment to appreciate his form.
"Dream journal?"
"Yeah. In the name of science, y'know? Write down every dream you can remember as you wake up."
She frowned. "An intriguing thought."

Roughly 250 years later...
"...Will, what exactly did you base this simulation of?" For some reason, Deanna seemed extremely amused.
"The logs kept by T'Pol of Vulcan, of course. I figured hers would be the most factual observation of events."
She nodded, barely hiding a smile. "Did you read the title of her 'logs'?"
Riker frowned. "Well...I was a little distracted, why?"
She pointed at the file-name, and he felt his face heat up.
"Oh."
File #7723843-A: 'Dream journal of commander T'Pol of Vulcan, 2156-2157'

And...

Jonathan Archer bowed his head as the life left his oldest friend. He felt numb. But as he was about to step out, a hand touched his. He looked up, into the wide open eyes of the flash-burned 'corpse'. Who was grinning. "Gotcha."

Okay I'm confused, is this a fixing "canon" challenge or just "screw *the_abomination*" because so far all of these are *the_abomination* fixes. Doesn't anyone want to fix The Communicator or that crappy Borg episode. And we do realize these aren't technically drabbles? Just checking, because I'm confused.

...in my case it was just a specific request for a certain gag. I added one of my own underneath just for fun.

As for not technically drabbles...mea culpa, no-one's ever actually explained to me exactly how drabbles work, so I just wrote however much I needed.

Okay for anyone who does not know, a "drabble" is exactly 100 words. No more, no less.

This is exactly what I wrote: 5 drabbles and a half (plus an infinitesimal part of a sixth drabble (three words): I am in credit of 147 words.

:tears: That's one way to do it. Seriously I thought I could NEVER write a proper drabble of exactly 100 words. But if you check the old drabble thread you'll see I learned. And I'm glad I did. It was quite possibly the most imforative writing excerise I've ever done. Some of us here are serious writers hoping to get original work published, but even for those who aren't you'd be astonished of what you can learn.

Ahh,WG. The rules are as set forth by Kotik are a sort of a drabble of similar, shorter or longer length. It does NOT have to be 100 words. It can be less or more. How much more I guess is as you like. go back to page one and read the first post by Kotik.

So, Asso's and Snorpenbas story are okay.

I did but Kotik didn't make the rules Putaro did. However everybody kept calling them "Drabbles"

MY mistake, Putaro. But neverthelessthe length is up to the writer. Drabble in this case is used for want of another word.

You just keep writing your wonderful stuff. We love you.

The strict definition of a drabble is EXACTLY 100 words, but usually there is a more liberal definition of it. In most places drabbles are considered stories of roughly 100 words. No prob if it are 96 words and no one will shoot the author it it is 120.

Well of course nobody will shoot you or reject the drabble. It's just Distracted and enterprikayak like to follow the rules and they run this joint. We do have a "cheat thread" you know. In any case some people didn't know what a "real drabble" was I was only clarifying for NEW PEOPLE.

Okay, here is a fix I always wanted to make. this is unedited, sorry

Commander?

“Tucker, “ Trip answered the Comm
“Archer, is Commander T’Pol there?”
“There isn’t any Commander T’Pol on board. Captain,” replied Trip
“You know who I mean,” snapped Archer
“Nope, can’t say I do,” replied Trip
“First Officr T’Pol then,” said Archer sharply
“Have to be an officer before you can be first officer,” said Trip
“T’Pol is first Officer so that makes her an officer,” retorted Archer
“Well, she isn’t a Vulcan Officer and not a Starfleet Officer so she isn’t an Officer.” said Trip
“If I designate her an officer then she is one,” said Archer
“Care to go back to the admiralty board on that one Captain,” said Trip
There was silence on the other end then. “No I don’t believe I want to bother the Admirals.” replied Archer
“But I do,” said Trip
Again a long silence,” Trip we will have to get together for a drink later. If you see T’Pol tell her I want t to see her,” said Archer.
“I believe the Lady T’Pol has no official status on board why would you want ot see her?’ Said Trip
“Forget it. Be at our morning staff meeting First Officer Tucker,” replied Archer.
T’Pol held her arms up from Trip’s bunk. “He will leave us alone now,” smiled Trip

While I understand your point I can't see this as "in character" for Trip to handle the situation in this way. That said, I think it would be a very intriguing story concept if handled differently. And the fluff was rather cute.
