Anyone watching "The Orville"

I posted this in Other Trek because it's basically Trek parody.

Anyhow, it hasn't hooked me to the point where I seek it out to watch it, but I've caught a few episodes and it usually has me lmao.

It kinda sucks, actually. Brannon Braga literally took his hat of recycled TNG plots and let Seth McFarland molest them.

Actually I like the Orville and have watched the entire first season. I found the early episodes somewhat cheezy, but thought that they got a lot better as the season went on. Yes some stuff is recycled but the vast majority of Sci-fi that gets produced into the non-written form is derivative.

To me its more a homage to TOS than anything else.

The show is a big prank war.
In space.
I 'spose I shouldn't expect more.
The last show I binged on before watching it was Doctor Who. So the bar was already raised way to high, I think.

I really like The Orville. It's vastly more Trekkian than that Discovery nonsense!

The premise made me lmao. The Captain got his command because the fleet overproduced starships. It made me think of McDonald's store managers so he's kinda like a McCaptain.

I think you missed some key information. The Captain had a very strong career and was expected to move up to the Star Trek version of an Enterprise class ship. Then his wife cheated on him and he couldn't cope with the fallout and his career got sidetracked. They gave him command of a lesser ship once again as a last chance.

Good command level officers are a rare commodity regardless of the universe and the number of possible commands is almost always greater than the number of qualified candidates.

Nope. All you said was ademantly stressed in the series. Very hard to miss, actually. But in the first episode the Admiral literally told him that they had overproduced starships and he was pretty much a McCaptain.

Watched the entire first season and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to season two (sounds like late Dec. for ep 1). Also like the idea the Seth G. Has an abiding love for Star Trek, I think he’ll continue to make a solid series. The wacky characters are fun too!

I'm a fan of The Orville as well. This is how I get my Trek fix nowadays, aside from re-watching old Trek (currently on ENT season 2). Discovery, like the JJ movies, aren't real Trek IMNSHO.
