It's for a book Virginia Postrel is writing on glamor. Be warned - It is extremely long. I used it as a way to show some love for my favorite Star Trek characters and actors.

I have started responding to the survey, but by 'eck you weren't kidding about it being long.

Interesting survey. Apparently she's planning to quote from it in her book. I'm trying to get my head around the concept of combining "Star Trek" and "glamor" in the same project, though. It's a stretch.

I suppose you could consider Jane Wyman or Nichelle Nichols to be glamorous, but that was (and is, in the case of Ms. Nichols) mostly offscreen. When I think of "glamorous" I think of untouchably gorgeous women dressed to the nines in evening gowns and diamonds. It's an old-fashioned concept. Very few people are "glamorous" these days, and there were precious few of them in ST even back in the day. Can men even BE "glamorous"? Aside from Liberace, that is?

She has a blog called Deep Glamour ( http://www.deepglamour.net/ ). It's not one of my usual reads, but it's occasionally linked from another site that I read (instapundit) and there's some interesting stuff there. I'm trying to figure out what her angle might be, too. Does she think we think Star Trek is glamorous? I don't know. I was honest with my answers, but I tried to come across as "normal" as possible.

Me, too. Sometimes I think non-ST fans really believe that all of us are psycho nut-jobs. I try every day to defy that stereotype, with variable results.

I, myself, am still in the ( Trek) closet in many of my life's venues. After coming "out" with my grandkids , I decided the closet was the place of least humiliation.

When I was young, admitting reading SciFi was not done. Brown Paper wraper so people would think you were reading Porn.

I cut my SciFi teeth on Heinlein (sp) then moved to Assimov and oters of the Golden Age of Scifi. but on the sly.

today I am a proud Trekkie and admit itto anyone who will listen. So I am a nut case. Not unusual in this day and age. Chose your Nut and join the crowd.

My problem with being a sci-fi nerd and geek, (because ST isn't my only vice) is that some people inculding one of my sisters thinks I have a tenuous grip on what is actually real. It's annoying.

Ignore her. She's probably just a figment of your imagination.

The thing is when we were kids we were both Trekiees. Oh well... Like I said lots of people think my head is constantly in the clouds.

Reality is just a crutch for those who can't handle science fiction!

No the irony is that I am actually quite the realist. I ignore a lot, but I am aware of it. Anyway I haven't decided whether to take the survey or not.

I'm pretty open about the fact that I like science fiction, especially Trek and Firefly. However, I have not admitted to anyone in "real life" that I participate in Star Trek message boards and write fanfiction. My friends and family would be SHOCKED. But you know, I kind of like having it be my own little secret. I guess this "secret life" is about as innocuous as possible, so what's the harm?
