New Movies's contributions to canon

Postby justTripn » Thu Jun 04, 2009 5:56 pm

I was thinking now that we've all had time to digest it, we can consider the new movies (positive) contributions to canon. It actually settles questions previously debated on this forum. I can think of 4 positive contributions:

1) What kind of cars/vehicles exist in the future? A: Both "regular" ones and flying ones. But enouph regular ones that they have roads.

2) Is Christianity alive and well in the future? A: YES! Did you see Kirk's father pull a cross out of his shirt and kiss it?

3) Is capitalism dead? Are advanced races living in socialist utopias? NO!

I'll give you the evidence for that one later. Got to run.

These are good observations, JT. I only saw the movie once, so I have not spotted all the details which seemed to fly by my tired old eyes. Uh, but, I will play devil's advocate here by saying the following: since this is an AU in the new movie, I am wondering whether it really resolves the questions for the RU? :?

Nevertheless, I wish if the movie shows evidence of one religion, than it would be nice if it also showed evidence of other earth religions like the Star of David, the Moslem moon/star symbol, the Wiccan 5 pointed star, etc. Just a thought. Did anyone notice evidence of other religions? Was the IDIC symbol in evidence either? It probably was, but I don't remember.

I always was suspicious of Picard's saying and I think it was in the movie "First Contact" and one TNG episode where they found those frozen people and revived them - that there was no longer a monetary system on earth. That is hard to believe. Maybe he meant officially? Human culture as far as I can see, would just not work with out the lubricant of "filthy lucre"! Some medium of exchange would be needed and people just love to acquire wealth. But again, canon contradicts itself for in DS9 with all those Ferengi characters, capitalism was in high gear.

Now that ground car and flying cars both exist in any era makes sense to me. And use of a variety of fuels from solar to gas. Maybe there would be many fewer gas powered vehicles. Hey, they might even have steam powered vehicles if they could improve the efficiency of them with stronger and lighter materials to contain the pressure. 8) What do you engineering types say about that?

Great thread idea, JT! And I'd love to see what other people say.

Exactly.
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to

I'm embarrassed to say I never noticed that cross at all! And that part of the movie grabs me more every time I see it. (Unlike others -- three times, I decided, was probably more than enough for most of it, at least for now.)

Seriously. My son wanted me to listen to the soundtrack during that section last night, and I just started crying. The way they handled the music there was just so beautiful. Alejandro looked at me in disbelief and said, "Are you crying over the music?"

My sister ABSOLUTELY insists that the RU is gone! She told me, "Forget about it it's not there!" And she loves this movie. IDK I'll probably love it as a movie but not a part of ST. Religions still exist in the RU as well, but I always thought that it just wasn't organized in the same way. I assumed that families would practice or at least claim to belong to a certain faith. That's the impression I got.

We now know that the sky on Vulcan is not always red. I don't know if it's a significant addition to canon.....I'm sure there are people who didn't like the change. But, it sure brings the whole thing back to scientific reality.

Actually, in Strange New World, somebody asks T'Pol if the sky on her planet is ever that color (blue), and I think she says, "Occasionally."

I prefer, for many reasons, to not comment this.

Well, there still is an RU. I know because I still LIVE THERE...at least in my mind and in all my fics.

Hey, I remember noticing that Vulcan's sky was not its "normal" color, but that just slipped out of mind. I do remember wishing we had seen more of the architecture of Vulcan cities in the movie. We had a snatch of it before Vulcan went down the black hole, but I NEVER get enough of Vulcan. :? :(

I only saw the movie once, so maybe I better go back and watch it again. Yes, and then I would be adding another statistic to the fact that people will still pay to watch Star Trek (or a facsimile there of  ).

ASSO I haven't even seen the movie yet, and my sister turns me into a stark raving lunatic anyway. She might have been just trying to get me riled up. Besides she's a casual Trekkie at best. She doesn't know what an AU, or alternate timeline is. She'll say she does but she doesn't.

Even though this movie is clearly established as an AU, with the point of divergence being Nero's return in time that erases the previous continuity from that point on, there are still so many inconsistencies that cannot be explained by Nero's incursion that I personally prefer to view everything as totally different, with no relation to any of the previous Treks.

Hence, this movie will not, in my view, contribute anything to the rest of Trek canon. It's not like nuBSG contributed to the canon of the old Battlestar Galactica

But that's all I'm going to say about this here. For those that thinks differently, happy posting.

:) Exactly! Which reminds me of some notes that came with my blueprints for the Enterprise D, which by the way, showed a large section dedicated to an aquarium for aquatic sentient species. It said don't be limited by these blueprints. More parts of the ship remain to be discovered and the "real" Enterprise is the one in the minds of the fans. Amen to that!

So the real Star Trek lives in the hearts and minds of the fans. Still I need a refresher every few years. I'm not a "watch the same old episodes 10 times" type of person. Also, part of the fun of Star Trek is it's communal. It belongs to the world. We've all shared boo hoo or a smile or been inspired by events in previous episodes and movies, as corny as they may seem in retrospect. If new, younger fans are joining the community, a big welcome to them. Call it an AU or a reboot or whatever works for you. It's two sorts of Star Treks that can coexist in my head. But the new one is a treasure trove of new Trek, at least for me. Anyway . . . back to the topic in my next post.
