This article was posted to one of the Yahoo groups I belong to yesterday. Apparently, they had wanted to include Shatner in the film, but couldn't find a way to do it that fits with "our" canon.

I'm glad they left it out, as it would've felt forced. I mean, they had a mind meld. Wouldn't that be more convincing than a hologram?

Personally I think it would have been too much (as well as messing up canon, as they say -- nice to know they cared). Personally I could have done without the Spock meets Spock scene, too, though I understand that it was their way of completing Spock's arc in that movie.
