Hmm. Seems to be a bit of a role-reversal in the UK.

I'd say that television news on the BBC is more widely trusted than a lot of print journalism. Newspapers in the UK are openly partisan. Whereas broadcasters, for the most part, are regulated by Ofcom. We're held to a much stricter code of conduct.

In the BBC particularly, there's a huge emphasis on safeguarding trust and how to present stories in an open, honest and balanced manner. In fact when I first started, I had to complete a week's worth of such training, before I was even allowed to pick up a microphone!

Oh, I agree, that's absolutely true, though I think the Guardian, the Times, and Reuters operate more along the American model. It's weird, because it's easier to win a libel suit in Britain, yet the press is far more irresponsible.

Truth is, the stretch of mostly responsible, ethical journalism we had in the US appears to have been temporary. It's dying out right now in favor of those operations that indulge in mindless celebrity crap and out and out partisanship. In the early days of our country the papers were horribly partisan, and it seems were headed back that way, only it's shifting to the Internet, with even fewer standards, where anyone with time on their hands can spread lies far and wide -- they don't even have to invest in a printing press anymore.

Heh. Can you imagine the newspapers after the events of the movie?

VULCAN DESTROYED: STARFLEET CALLS CAUSE CLASSIFIED
beneath which would be PUBLIC OUTCRY: STARFLEET HAS TOO MUCH POWER

REMEMBERING VULCAN
complete with a snazzy timeline

JAMES T. KIRK: SAVIOR OF EARTH
this article would feature a large picture of Kirk which would shortly thereafter be on the walls of millions of teenage girls

OP-ED: WHAT'S WRONG WITH STARFLEET?
An exploration of why, exactly, it took an in-trouble cadet to save Earth.

INTERVIEW WITH MONTGOMERY SCOTT
in which he is asked many questions about Kirk, and his little friend annoys the reporter

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
highlights include: someone predicting that the black hole where Vulcan was will soon gobble up Earth (followed two days later by a letter rebuking this), someone who knew Kirk as a kid and thought he was destined for greatness, and two people justifying Starfleet classifying all the details of the incident; lowlights include some idiot who thinks surviving Vulcans should be crying

EDITORIAL CARTOONS
two somber memorials to Vulcan and one irreverent one where Kirk is being named Master of the Universe

:) As a historian you study a lot of primary sources, don't you?

The more conservative newspaper would have ed/op-ed headlines like HAS STARFLEET LOST ITS MIND? and EARTH'S DEFENSE IN THE HANDS OF INCOMPETENTS AND CHILDREN.

Perhaps the really conservative one would say WHO NEEDED VULCAN, ANYWAY?

Then there are the feature articles...

VULCANS WITHOUT VULCAN
Claim Survivor's Guilt "Illogical"

WarpGirl, you've been talking about a cold or at least cold medicine for weeks now. Have you been to a doctor about it yet?

Yeah and my mommy has it too. She got it first gave it to me and I accidently gave it back. We're both screwed! Back to the movie, How are the costumes on Vulcan? I've only seen mini-skirts on TV.
