Man, if I were thinking of posting new fanfic here, I'd look at how few reviews Eireann has gotten on the end of her wonderful Fur and Fathers story so far and say "why bother?"

If you want more good stuff, don't forget to feed the author!!!

That could have more to do with the fact that there are only a handful of people in here to begin with and all the regulars have done their fair share of commenting. ff.net will get a whole lot more comments than in here.

Stop this shit right there! In here nobody's going to be guilt-rided into commenting. If people don't comment it has a reason.

In my case the only 'reason' is lack of time - there have been some great stories recently and I'm ashamed that I haven't taken the trouble to thank the authors properly yet.

There is no time limit on comments. I often leave a review only after reading a story two or three times. And besides, as with everything, comments are a case of quality over quantity. If you can post a story on ff.et at the linguistic level of a four year old and still collect 200 reviews - what are they worth? I'd rather settle for the four reviews per chapter that I know are genuine.
