Does anyone know what movie T'Pol is watching in her dream at the end of "Impulse"?

It didn't look or sound like one of the Hope and Crosby road movies to me, but then I haven't seen them. None of my usual online sources had any trivia on this one.

Here's the dialogue from that scene, courtesy of Chrissie's Transcript Site:

PHLOX: Something tells me we haven't seen the last of the detective in the bow tie.
TUCKER: No, he died in a house fire.
PHLOX: Ah, did he? The autopsy was inconclusive. I wouldn't be surprised if the body belonged to the delivery man with the strange limp. You never did see him leave the house.
TUCKER: What about the gardener? He was there too.
PHLOX: Too tall. Even the primitive forensics of the mid-twentieth century would have determined that.
T'POL: Perhaps we should watch, and find out.
TUCKER: Part of the fun of a mystery is trying to solve it before it ends, using logic. You of all people should appreciate that.
T'POL: Then use logic more quietly.

Sorry... I looked but with such a small criteria... Were there any voices from the film itself, or images. Maybe if I knew an actor, or just saw a shot of the screen I could help. Classic Movies are an obsession of mine, and I'd love to help you.

Well, there are clear pictures of what might be the lead actor on page 43 and 44 of the Trek Core screen cap pages for "Impulse." He looks a bit like Gregory Peck to me, but I'm no expert in that era. I would guess that it's some kind of noir detective story.

(I also suspect I'm putting more effort into this than the original episode writers did, so don't make yourself nuts over it.)

OK Alan Ladd that narrows it down considerably. Now all I need to do is look up Allan Ladd's filmography.

OK Were there any lines that you can hear in the episode. I've narrowed it down to the timeframe the movie was made, and there are several options. I've seen most of them so if there is a line I should know it.

I thought it might be that Dis... But for the life of me I do not remember a house fire in it. I know the movie by heart, I only saw every Allen Ladd movie in my local library in NY...

Hmm. I watched that scene over. There's something about "west" and maybe "dead end" but that's all I can make out. Unfortunately the often compulsively informative Okudas have nothing to say on the matter on the commentary track, and there are no credits in the credits.

I think I'll just have to let this one go. Apparently T'Pol saw a film noir at an earlier movie night and it is capable of populating her nightmares. The mentions in the script are probably just made up since it hardly mattered, especially since that whole scene was thrown together at the last minute because after editing that episode ran too short.

Dang! It is important!!!! I knew the movie when I saw the episode. I nearly sang with joy when I recognized it, and now I got doezens of possibilities and no 100% answer. One wonderful thing about ENT was movie night and the absolutely fabulous Classic Films they used. I hate not getting this right!

Movie Night leads me to a quirk about Trip's personality that I've always found interesting. He's the chief engineer of Earth's first Warp 5 starship, so he's constantly surrounded by the newest and best technology. However, he always picks old movies for movie night. I suppose it's possible Hollywood completely shut down at some point and no new movies were made, but I kinda doubt it. I think Trip just has an attraction to old stuff. I think he'd also be into classic cars, classic rock, etc.

No they made movies in the 22nd century he and Malcolm talk about them sometimes. Trip is retro! Just like Tom Paris... God no wonder I'd like a date with either... Classic movies ROCK!

OK So the real reason for the old movies is Paramount can run their movie collection and not shell out cash because the people who made them are dead. But a girl can dream...
