Well I think T'Pol would be rational enough to realize that whether or not the origin of the ring was to determine fidelity Trip's reasons for presenting her with a ring would not be that! However, the explantion on the website was much more romantic. The Sultan gave the ring to one wife his great love, because he was going to war. He hoped she would be faithful.
