Yep folks, it's that time again already.

For those who haven't played before: I give you a single word, and you write a story about Trip and/or T'Pol inspired by that word. Any style, any genre, long or short, it doesn't matter, but it's a great opportunity to try something you haven't done before. If your responses are short and suitable for general audiences, feel free to post them here. If longer or not "family-friendly", or if you just plain want to, go ahead and submit your response for archival.

There are no expiration dates on these, so feel free to try any prompt past or present, or even revisit one you've done before with a new story. I just post new words monthly to keep things moving.

Hmmmm.....that's a good one. The answer will come to me in a dream, I'm sure.

I had already begun the story Dusk when the challenge for this month was posted, but I hadn't finished it. But the word "Spirit" solved the big narrative problem I had with the episode and showed me how to end it. So, thanks Aquarius.

Overheard: Once a Year

It is the evening of the Gad T’Vokau. It is the duty of every Vulcan this day to remember the contributions of our ancestors to the welfare of T’Kasi. It is by their efforts that we live in peace and prosperity today. Their struggles in logic and self-control, their achievements in science and technology, their calm and courage in battle. May their katras be at peace.

I sit once more in my garden, my meditation lamp before me. The dimness of dusk and its cool breeze surround me.
I confess that the more remote the ancestor, the easier it is to contemplate his or her actions. Contemplating the lives of one’s immediate forbearers is somewhat…challenging at times. Curious.

Thank the gods. An interruption.

A grubby hand grasps the top of the garden wall. A dirty face and tangled hair soon follow.

My neighbor’s child. Of course.

Surak. I have never seen a child a tenth so filthy. The golden hair contains soil and leaves, the clothes are stained and torn, and the face is covered with dirt and…ah. The wet blue eyes survey me for some seconds, tears sparkling on the long lashes.

“Tobeg-tor, Tela’at.”

“Na’shaya, Behsu’kan. Are you standing on your sehlat again, child?

“No sir, I climbed up this time.”

“May I ask how you acquired your state of…dishevelment?”

“Well, I fell off a couple of times. Actually, I’m kind of stuck, sir.”

“A moment…”

A firm grasp of the back of the dusty jacket, a heave, and the habitual disturber of my peace stands on the flagstones of the garden path.

“Are you hurt Behsu’kan?”

“No, sir.” Firmly.

Ah. Then we shall disregard the tears.

“Where is your companion, child? She should be with you.”

“She is, sir. I think she’s at your front gate.”

“Indeed. Her grasp of etiquette shows high intelligence. You are fortunate in your pet. May I ask you a question, Behsu’kan?”

“Why do you never come to the front gate?”

evcake, that was wonderful. Could there ever be any doubt that the dirty little child belonged to Trip, that is just the way I picture him as a child. I believe that instead of 'the habitual disturber of my peace' this child is the neighbor's source of joy. Please, please keep writing these little gems.
