Re: Randomness

Well we also have a pool so that helps. Right now, there are 8 of us. My sister bro-in-law the two boys and another grammy, have joined me and the Parental units and we're a bit like Gilligan's island. That said, positive vibes would be appreciated. No showers and I smell like sweaty baby!

Re: Randomness

Last summer it was an earthquake this summer... TORNADO! Yep, last night. I'm fine, family's fine. The entire town doesn't have power! We're on a generator so I have to conserve energy. Just enough time to tackle email and to let Y'all know what happened just in case I'm not around for a while.

Re: Randomness

Now that might be do-able, although we're thinking about buying a new laptop so I might keep this one, or just take the new one and do as I please.

Re: Any Southern Literature fans out there?

I'm just glad I'm not in any of your classes. I have a feeling I'd fail them all, or it would be a repeat of my saga with two professors from my own college days. Not something I'd ever want to go through again. Thanks for the link.

Re: Any Southern Literature fans out there?

I'm afraid I disagree, of course she's dead so nobody even the most dedicated literary scholar would know what was in her mind at the time, but in MP it was quite obvious that her sense of positive thinking and the wry wit (while tinged with a healthy dose of cynicism and sarcasm) was just completel...

Re: Any Southern Literature fans out there?

Actually I was thinking of Mansfield Park but I'm not too keen on Persuasion either. But MP was clearly a time in her life when she was bitter and cynical and supremely unhappy.

Re: Any Southern Literature fans out there?

I love to see how some writers like Twain, evolve. I happen to love Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn but it's so interesting to see the process of "growing up" in an author's work and how they've changed. Sometimes for the better, sometimes (in the case of Jane Austen) for the worse. Then again so...

Re: Any Southern Literature fans out there?

But Gone With the Wind is not a romance novel! The vapid predecessor Scarlet is. Anybody who reads the book knows that the plot is not the "love story." Gatsby on the other hand is entirely about the pursuit of "The American Dream" in order to be worthy of a woman! I'd call that ...

Re: Any Southern Literature fans out there?

And in a way each of the characters you've described could be an archetype, WG. The Melanie of the book, for example, represents the best of Southern society but she also ultimately succumbed to that denial-of-the-negative that could sometimes be so positive (she was repeatedly warned not to have a...

Re: Any Southern Literature fans out there?

SB I think your post more accurately describes the movie, rather than the book. In the book, the language is very harsh, or as a gentleman as yourself would probably say "salty." D-- and H--- and other not so polite and refined words litter the pages. And while yes, it *does* have the fam...

Re: Any Southern Literature fans out there?

Well how many people considered The Great Gatsby true Lit, in 1922? Or Jane Eyre? Or many other books written by the "greats" in their time. Charles Dickens greatest novels were originally serialized for syndication in the news papers of his day. Sometimes art becomes Iconic without being ...
