Re: Hatchery
I'm betting they were willing to be realistic to the point that they 1) didn't have to slow things down to explain it to the audience, 2) didn't have to give up any drama, 3) wouldn't have to go over budget, and 4) didn't have to slow down the process to actually, you know, look it up or ask somebo...

Re: CMO Phlox
I reiterate. NO Ships Captain is a doctor or has a medical degree. That is why his autoruty stops at the Sickbay door. In. Your. Opinion. That isn't how the shows worked so saying that it is absolutely this way when there's visual evidence to the contrary doesn't make sense. When it boils down to it...

I sometimes have to wonder if we watched the same show.

Cogito wrote:It would be daft for a crew organised on military lines not to have clear regulations defining how a command change could be effected, but there's nothing to say that Starfleet aren't daft.
I'd go so far as to say that there is five shows worth of evidence to prove they are daft.

Re: Hatchery
I thought they were pretty obvious in establishing that the captain was more akin to an Age of Sail captain, which would automatically grant the skipper a lot more leeway and power than a modern ship commander. And it's patently obvious that Starfleet isn't the United States Navy - it has evolved in...

Hey, I always get a chuckle at the final sickbay scene and how T'Pol gives Trip a glance and he automatically falls into step behind her when they leave. Or how Trip kinda-sorta raises an eyebrow when he's talking to Archer at the end.

Re: Hatchery
I'm convinced that you don't have to have the crew act like idiots in order for them to have interesting adventures. Sadly, you can probably count the number of shows (regardless of genre) that obeys this rule on one hand. Which is probably why I've, for the most part, written off television entire...

Re: Hatchery
You forgot "T'Pol got to use the nerve pinch!"
"Hatchery" is one of my guilty favorites. Yeah, its got holes, but since this is Trek, we should be accustomed to plot holes.

Re: Trip Wrong?
Too simple, my friend. That's what is told all of us when a response is denied to us. Uh, no. It's what I say when I don't have enough data. You're looking at a complicated issue and making a judgment based on human morals and ideals, which don't take into account extraterrestrial biology or mores....

Re: Trip Wrong?
Rigil, by chance you've read The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni? If you did not, I advise you to do so. A very interesting figure is that of Dr. Azzeccagarbugli (Quibbleweaver). Please, do not take this as an offense to you, because in fact you are substantially right. That term - substantially - ...

When the attack broke off she came out of her daze and did command well.
By which point it was already too late.
You're making my point for me, man.

Re: Trip Wrong?
You're missing my point. We don't know. We weren't given enough information to make an informed decision. We saw only snippets and slices of data, not the whole. Biology could have hardwired the cogenitor so s/he is only super-intelligent for short spurts of time and Trip encountered that cogenitor ...

Re: Court Martial
I call it online presence. The gentleman I knew in the KOTOR world was also Ex-military, had no patience for a poorly done arguement, loved writing explosions, battles, and death, and a darn good romance that wasn't all that mushy at all. And proudly declared himself a misanthorpe. In fact he prett...

Re: Trip Wrong?
I said this before, that Trip was lucky that the Vissians didn't view his actions as an act of war. He was interfering in their reproductive practices. Was he wrong about the Cogenitor? No. Was he right to do what he did? From a HUMAN perspective yes. But how he went about it was all wrong. He shou...

Misanthrope, please. I don't hate women ... but humanity in general? Well, that's another story entirely.
