Chapter 1

Disclaimer: No ownership implied. No profit made.

He was a shadowy figure in a shadowy organization. Few knew him and fewer knew his name. Yet he was one of the most feared men on Romulus. Through his organization he managed to install his choice of what he considered the best, brightest, and most aggressive military leaders and politicians. He had not yet acquired the total control that he wanted but was getting close to his goal.

He had come up slowly. Starting as a junior officer and rising on merit, brains, courage, and sheer cunning. He had eliminated competition ruthlessly. His hand now was felt everywhere.

If he had the total control he desired, things would be different. He remembered the most important lesson he ever learned. He had been assigned as an attaché to a Romulan Embassy. The Station Chief showed him how important an Embassy could be to the Plans of the Romulans. The chief had built a group that was made up of officials in the military, politics and the business world on the Planet. He also had a group of ordinary citizens who did his bidding. He had his tentacles in all of the power seats. He showed how Embassy Parties and receptions were gold mines of information. The embassy officers were tight lipped except for the occasional one who drank more than was wise. But it was the gossip that interested the Chief. He found out about weaknesses, habits, who was sleeping with whom, who needed funds, who was open to Blackmail. He slowly compromised many officers, many wives. By the time the Romulans were ready, the chief was in a position to disrupt the economy, cause a political crisis, and disable the military enough. The planet fell like a rotten fruit. Romulan overlords now ruled the whole system.

He had tried to get the Romulans to approach Earth to exchange ambassadors and open an embassy on Earth. He knew that he could soon have a thriving organization of Humans who were ready to commit treason for wealth, could be blackmailed, or could have their appetites satisfied until they could be blackmailed. But the Romulans had threatened the Humans, alerting them. Now the Humans had a federation of planets and were fast becoming a force in the quadrant. The Romulus had to eliminate that growing force. He regretted that he could not do it from within but what was done, was done.

He looked at the Dossiers on his desk all obtained by his Vulcan organization leader. He took the first one and opened it. Captain Archer an aggressive commander. Well, Archer's aggressiveness would be used against him at a later date. He would be dealt with quickly. He put Archer’s file aside.

The second one. Hoshi Sato. Brilliant Linguist. Her universal translator was widely known and used. He had one and so did most of the important people on Romulus. He received copies of every update she created. She would be valuable when Earth was conquered. Until then she was to be left alone. He put her dossier down.

The third. Lt Commander Malcolm Reed. Security Officer. Dedicated, highly intelligent, tenacious. He had been security officer on the Enterprise in addition to being armory and tactical officer. Under used and undervalued. He should be head of Starfleet Security but wasn't. He would be a formidable adversary. He must be eliminated or neutralized.

The next, Commander T’POl Tucker. A Vulcan woman. Outstanding in Science and mathematics. Coldly logical. Brave and deadly. But most importantly she was married to....

The last dossier. Commander Charles Tucker. Brilliant Engineer. Highly educated, brave, loyal, and incorruptible. Also under used and undervalued. He should head of Starfleet Engineering instead of being a Chief Engineer. But there was something odd in his dossier. He supposedly had been killed in an explosion on board the Enterprise but showed up a year later claiming he had not been in the room where the explosion had taken place. He had been around a corner and down a long hallway when it went off. He said he had been blown into a storage closet filled with blankets which saved his life but suffered a blow to his head which caused amnesia. It was only much later when he saw a photo of his wife that his memory returned and he went home.

He wondered, his senses tingled. Where had Tucker really been for that year? He couldn't buy that amnesia story.

He would have his agent on Earth check to see if he could discover the real reason Tucker had been gone for a year.

His agent had been busy recruiting more Humans. The agent had a number of assignments but the most important was what the Humans had up their sleeves. He was waiting for the first reports to come in. A communications link had been established and coding material was carried by the agent. He sat back. Just have to let the agent get into place and start to work.

The weak link in all of this was the Orion females. They were the communication link but he suspected that they had their own plans from the Orion Syndicate. They would be dealt with at the proper time.

Transwarp. I am taking the track that Earth is just going out into  space. they have bumped into some species that are friendly and some  not so. But they really haven't seen much. Remember Enterprise was the first Starship. Other than freighters there has not been much of a human presence in the  Galaxy.

However, I have never gone along with the we don't know what romulans look like. I think that somewhere alng the line they would find ut that Romulans were once Vulcans and departed Vulcan because they wre different. they had ridges and wer more open with their emotions but physically they would look like vulcans. Kirk did know what Romulans looked like as he was once surgically altered to look like one. Spock too knew as he had that mission to find out some Romulan Technology and he met this Beautiful Romulan Commander.

Romulans and the Orion syndicates are soulmates so using the Orioon Females ad a communication conduit is rasonable since the spy Master doesn't wnat any trail leading back to him and the females are good enough  to keep his presence unkown.

Transwarp

I like the way you build suspense as you lay the groundwork.  Cloak-and-dagger does seem to be one of your strengths.  I, too, am intrigued by Trip's missing year.

One thing I wonder, though, is how the Romulans can hope to keep their physical appearances secret from other species (like Earth's) if they have Embassies on other worlds.  It seems unlikely that humans would still not know what Romulans look like a hundred years later (in Kirk's time) if all they had to do was send someone to the Romulan Embassy on Orion and wait for the ambassador to show up for work...

Distracted

Definitely an attention-catching beginning. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with this.

Dinah

I like this shadowy Romulan.  He's quite the mover and shaker.  The dossiers on the senior staff of Enterprise were very interesting.  I eager to see what Mr. X has in mind for our intrepid heroes and Earth.  My guess is it can't be good.  I'm looking forward to your next chapter. ;)

bluetiger

Well that beginning certainly grabs you. What is the mystery of Trip's absence and who is this person? Very interesting.

Lady Rainbow

Hmmm...who is this person? and it seems that this person has big plans for the future of our intrepid crew.

And sounds like the Orion females (Navaar?) are going to be in big trouble, too.

Nice story so far! :)

Asso

Hey! That is very interesting, by Jove!
:pA few lines and you built plot, scene and atmosphere.
Well done. Now I want to see what is going to happen and what did happen.
And that fact... Trip with his wife... there is something hidden in all this. I bet.;)
